Jeff Stelling has been praised by viewers in an throwback post with his epic rant live on Sky Sports about the New Year honours list.
The much loved clip back from December 2017 was published onto Twitter again this week and it’s since had nearly 1 million views as well as nearly 40,000 likes.
Jeff is one who thinks “a lot” of people on the 2018 list shouldn’t have been given honours, and every year since, his point still stands with this argument doing the rounds every year.
OMG!!! Jeff Stelling nailing the issue with the Honours system. Wow. Well said sir!!!

Although the annual roll call of people to be awarded knighthoods, MBEs, OBEs, CBEs and other honours from the Queen, there are some controversial additions from the worlds of celebrity and politics.
The titles, he told his fellow Soccer Saturday presenters, should be reserved for “ordinary people for doing extraordinary things” in the realms of charity, bravery and community work.
Not “the rich and famous”, sports stars or “political cronies”.
Jeff told him to “stop”, saying the titles should not be given to “someone for doing their job and being paid” or to those who have achieved success on the pitch or made their name in politics.
He added: “Not me. Not a lot of people who are on that list. Happy New Year.”
Sky Sports Retro caught wind again in 2022 that people had seen the clip re-emerge online, so put it out again via their social media channels – and Jeff Stelling was again praised by viewers with his epic rant live on TV, though others had something else to say on it…
@JohnRConstable: Totally agree with Jeff Stelling on “Honours”. Those who are offered such honours should think very carefully about whether it is justified. Only honour everyday people who’ve done extraordinary things for charity, heroism or exceptional community work.
@DaveRos63098369: The people who are likely to be offered them for the wrong reason are the same people who would probably accept them whatever the reason. Jeff is right here, though.
@wellhyper: Yeah hit the nail on the head. I wouldn’t mind an MBE for getting up at 6am every day and working outside in all weathers but hey ho. 😜
@Screeeeamer: You can have one from me – let’s calls it – the everyday award – where we nominate each other for getting through daily shit! 😅😅 congratulations!
@greenkeeperdave: My father in law has run a boxing club for over 50 years and never taken a penny out in a tough area of Coventry, we’ve nominated him twice and nothing… It’s a horribly run system sometimes
@ethansgrumps: Nailed it @JeffStelling It’s great to be recognised for all the work we do voluntarily but it grates a bit when you see some of the awards made. I was elated to get a BEM for well over a decade of community and charity work but had never heard of the BEM beforehand! To add to that @JeffStelling should be honoured for all the amazing work he’s done for @ProstateUK and the lives he’s saved by raising awareness and funds
@oasispj38: Spot on. Handed out like sweets to people that make a lot of money doing what they love.
@Frigbo: Agree with the sentiment entirely. Although, I do have an issue with the use of the phrase “ordinary people” which implies famous people are somehow more important…
@shizz1960: Too right. The honours system is completely back to front. It’s simply an ego thing for most of them. Sportsmen in particular get paid a shed load of money for doing something they love and that should be the end of it.
@JohnnyBoylan2: Yep. If Celebs have to have them after a lifetime eg Dame Agatha Christie, Sir Charlie Chaplin, Sir Alfred Hitchcock – all in their 70s/80s after decades as GLOBAL ICONS. Not Mo Farrah, Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton, Laura or Jason Kenny for brief sporting UK success.
@keend403: Right on the Money!!
@andie1105: 100%. This is exactly what I said yesterday!! No one should receive an award for doing what they’re paid for ffs! If that’s the case most of the country should get one!! @GBNEWS @BorisJohnson @RoyalFamily
@DaveJB1962: A year or 2 ago I know but still true & still it goes on. This clip needs to be retweeted again & again every year
@Doddsie16: What are we going to do without him?? Saturdays will never be the same without @JeffStelling 😢
@sharha64: Absolutely….. win a sports medal, get an honour….. NO
@masondylanjames: 39848176739th reason why a love jeff stelling
@byndjspr: I genuinely think Jeff Stelling might be the best bloke ever. Genuinely on par with Jesus. Seriously find me someone who doesn’t like the guy
@JoeRowley98: This attitude is unmatched by anyone in the sporting world. A true role model.
@swanseacity1: Spot on @JeffStelling!!! The New Year’s honours list has become an absolute joke! You get an MBE for winning a sports event, absolute shambles.
@SheikhKhaledd: absolutely love @JeffStelling 99.9% he’s right about everything he talks about and speaks with passion!
@stevenufcsmith: One of the rare moments on Soccer Saturday when someone talks sense. Once again it’s Jeff. 👏👏👏
@jwhcafc: Full nation deserves a MBE or OBE for sticking to the poor restrictions
@harrylisterr: Could you love this man anymore, national treasure. Going to be sorely missed.
@pompey9219: Brilliantly summed up. Lotta respect for people who speak out on behalf of the little guy when they have a large audience. Already love Jeff, but even more so now 👏 🇬🇧
@SharonPascoe123: 100% happy for those who are nominated and receive, being honest I often reflect… but this! Unbelievable Jeff 👏🏼👏🏼❤️
