Jay Stansfield pays tribute to his late father Adam Stansfield after scoring the ‘best goal’ of his career against Plymouth on Saturday.a
Birmingham’s new hero netted a dramatic 95th minute winner to beat the rivals of his former club by two goals to one, coming off the bench and instantly impressed.
Plymouth gave it as good as they got with it looking like Birmingham were going to draw 1-1, however Stansfield had other ideas by scoring a wonder goal.

It comes just two days after the 20 year old signed on loan from Fulham having spent last season out on loan with Exeter, Plymouth’s rivals.
The 20-year-old got onto a loose ball on the edge of the Plymouth area and used flicked the ball over a trailing defender’s leg before hitting it on the volley to help secure the Blues’ fourth consecutive win in all competitions and their 10th point out of an available 12 in the Championship.
Stansfield, said it was his best-ever goal, and took inspiration he takes from his late footballing father who passed away in 2010.
“I couldn’t have dreamed of a better debut. It doesn’t get much better, especially against Plymouth. He scored many good goals – my goal would be to score as many goals as he did and become a hero like he did,” Stansfield said.
“I think of him every day and the last couple of weeks I could’ve done with him and a bit of advice. I had so many teams coming in and I didn’t know which one to go to. It’s quite tough deciding if I was moving away from home, moving up the country, down the country.
“But I’ve got all my family around me. I’ve got my stepdad who helps massively and also my mum, who doesn’t know much about football but gives me lots of advice in a family sense,” Stansfield continued.
Speaking to BluesTV post-match, the Head Coach John Eustace said: “It just shows we have got that never-say-die attitude. The whole squad today was used and the way we finished the game was great – a fantastic finish from young Jay.
“But the way we defended the box [because] we weren’t great with the ball today and Plymouth played some really good football, the way we stuck to the task of defending the box for our lives and limited them to one or two good chances was really pleasing.
“As long as you do that you are right in the game and the subs have made a fantastic difference again today.
“It shows that we are doing the right things. The medical and sports science teams work their socks off to make sure this group of players are ready for the game.
“The team spirit of this team is just growing. It is something that I am big on and during real difficult moments throughout the season, it is really important that the players keep working and the fans stick with us. They did that today.”
