Jamie Vardy scores after 21 seconds and celebrates by giving it large to Southampton fans

Jamie Vardy scores after 21 seconds to put Leicester City ahead and celebrates by giving it large to the Southampton fans.

Leicester’s Stephy Mavididi crossed from the far side and the ball landed for Vardy who was left unmarked on the penalty spot and he slotted it home.

An unreal start for the Foxes catching the hosts cold, leaving St Mary’s stunned. Hopefully everyone in the away end made it out in time to watch that opener.

Don Goodman on Sky Sports Football: “Brilliant start for Leicester. A shocker for Southampton.”

Jo Tessem (Ex-Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio Solent): “After that 5-0 loss to Sunderland, if you’re going to be competitive in this league sometimes you have to make changes.

“You have to let your squad know that if you’re not up for it, your are not going to play.”

Shortly after, Leicester keeper superbly prevented an equaliser. Mads Hermansen denied Che Adams from close range after the Foxes gave the ball up on the edge of their own area.

The Danish keeper found it all too easy towering over defenders, claiming corners and saving shots.

It didn’t take too long for Leicester to make it 2-0. Well worked by Leicester who punished Southampton.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall threaded the needle between Saints defenders with 21-year-old Kasey McAteer getting onto the low ball, entered the box, shot and scored first time.

Jo Tessem: “Southampton look totally confused at the back. Leicester are so much more comfortable on the ball.”

Don Goodman: “It is already a mountain to climb for Southampton. “He’ll be looking for a reaction now, Russell Martin.”

A near own goal after that, when a brilliant ball in from Fraser down the Southampton left hit the head of Mavdidi through Adams. Close to going in, but just went wide of his own goal.

Leicester had a wobble just after that, as on the 25th minute, a mistake saw Doyle step across the ball and left it to be picked up by Adams, who sent it to Samuel Edozie, who dinked it in to get one back for the Saints.

Don Goodman: “I do like a dink.”

Smallbone went into the book for hacking down Winks on the half hour mark, then Vardy went forward again, taking the ball with his back to goal and laid it off for Ndidi. He drive it first time, but Bazunu palmed it wide.

On 40 minutes Dewsbury-Hall was booked for a lunge on Walker-Peters. The resulting free-kick found Harwood-Bellis in the middle, but couldn’t make proper contact with Manning’s delivery.

Leicester made a quick break, Mavididi on the ball, getting into the box and got a shot away, but it went straight to Bazunu. McAteer had been in so much space if he saw him, instead went for goal.

Another big chance for Leicester saw them make their through Southampton and Mavididi attempted to get a shot on goal, but he put it across with the side of his foot.

It became more end-to-end with both goalkeepers Mads Hermansen for Leicester and Gavin Bazunu for Southampton called into action.

Don Goodman did however criticise the hosts’ defending, saying: “Southampton are simply not applying the basic laws of defending.”

Leicester then made it 3-1 just before the break with Ndidi finding the net on 45+2 minutes.

Mavididi produced a brilliant turn on the edge of the box before he feed the ball to Wilfried Ndidi, who then then stepped away from Harwood-Bellis, before sticking the ball past Bazunu.

That was the last of first half action in the televised Championship fixture. Boos rang around the ground.

In the 51st minute, Winks went into the book for a pull of the shirt on Charles.

In the 67th minute, Sulemana gave the ball away to Mavididi on the edge of the Leicester box. B

ut due to so many Southampton players being forward, all Mavididi had to do is skip past Smallbone, then raced into the Saints area, had options left and right, but went alone and beat Bazunu.

Fatawu had just come on and quickly went into the book along with Manning. Then in injury time, Akgun went into the book late on.

In the 95th minute, a chance for a Leicester fifth with Mavididi playing in Iheanacho. But he put it over.

Bad to worse for Southampton on 97 minutes, as Kamaldeen Sulemana produced a rash lunge on Justin, and he was shown a straight red card.

Leicester go top of the Championship with a dominant away win over Southampton.
