Jamie Vardy punches himself for missing a sitter and scores after Watford fans chant about his wife

Jamie Vardy punches himself in the head for missing a sitter and then scores after Watford fans sing chant about his wife.

It was quite the eventful game for the 36 year old, scoring twice, won a penalty, got booked, crunched into a tackle, missed a sitter, taunted the away end and punched himself in the head.

Leicester managed to get themselves back to winning ways at the top of the Championship with Vardy netting a late double to make it their first victory in three matches.

The win became City’s 14th in 17 matches so far this season, with Enzo Maresca’s men now sitting 10 points clear ahead of the playoff places, and three points ahead of second place Ipswich Town, who lost the late kick off to West Brom.

“It’s definitely important,” Vardy said, as per lcfc.com. “We had the chance to reset after the international break. We’ve been working hard on the training field with the lads who were not on international duty and everyone’s come back.

“They know what’s been happening in training and put that into work on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I think, overall, it was a very good performance today.”

On scoring his 6th and 7th goals of the season, Vardy added: “I managed to get two. I could have had four to be honest, especially with the volley. I think the centre-back’s just got a flick on it.

“Trying to readjust had put me in a bit of an awkward position, but the main thing is we’ve got the three points. As you saw, with how we played, we maintained the ball and kept on the attack. I think that suited us perfectly today.”

Vardy’s penalty saw him take on centre-back Ryan Porteous, after Watford had used all their subs before Bachmann’s dismissal, admitting it was a turn of events which he had to manage when he stepped up from 12 yards.

“I think that’s my first one [against an outfield player],” he goes on. “In my head, I thought, as a player, he’s probably going to think I’m just going to blast it straight down the middle. It was just put to the side and he’s stood and tried gambling late on. It’s gone in the back of the net and that’s all that matters.”

Enzo Maresca said, as per lcfc.com: “I think overall we deserved to win. We improved in the second half. In the first half it was just a matter of tempo – starting quick with free-kick and goal-kicks – if they are not man-to-man, we can start quick.

“Stephy [Mavididi] missed a chance; Jamie [Vardy] missed a chance. At the end of the day, it will happen to all of them. It’s normal. In football, you don’t always take your chances, but the most important thing is the consistency to continue to try.

“You expect missed chances apart from Jamie. It was a big chance, but the good thing is that we missed chances, but we continued. In the end, finally, we scored. As I always say, when we win or when we lose, there are many things we can improve.

“But this is a journey that started less than five months ago so thinking that in five months everything is working well is not a reality. Especially after two defeats, seeing how difficult it is to win games, we continue in the way we want to play. It’s difficult, it’s a process but we are improving.

“When I saw Jamie missing twice, I thought it was not going to happen, but Jamie has scored goals all his life and he will continue to do so. This is the reason why he’s Jamie Vardy. He’s scored more than 100 goals in the Premier League and he has always scored goals in his life.

“You have to be there. You miss a chance and then he was there again. That was the most important thing. He missed a chance and he was in the right position. When you are in the right position inside the box you can miss and in the end you are going to find the goal.

“I was also happy with Kel’s performance. He was dropping to give us an extra man in the middle, which is what we are looking for and then he also had some chances inside the box and I don’t think by dropping we missed a striker inside the box because every time we arrived in the last third we always had five or six players in the box.”

Valerien Ismael said: “We have improved a lot since the Leeds United away game. The first half was good, we knew before the game we had two game plans. The first one was out of possession we needed to show big solidarity. You know you will suffer here; their quality is very high and their possession game is excellent. We had to work together. The more difficult the game is, the more you have to stick together.

“The second part of the game plan was when we get the ball, we need to believe in ourselves and make them defend. We needed to create chances because here you won’t get a lot of chances, two or three maybe. But when you get them, you need to take them.

“I thought in the second half, out of possession and until the goal we were solid, but we lost the ball too quickly. We didn’t make the right decisions. It’s a lot to take when the opponent is coming in wave after wave. Then you have to be really strong. I thought we were much better as soon as we conceded the goal. We were on top. Good situations, creating chances and we had the big chance at the end with Ryan Porteous; maybe if he saw Matheus Martins on the left, it could have been better for us.”
