Jamie Carragher takes up role with ambitious non league club with long-term vision in mind

Jamie Carragher takes up a role with ambitious non league club Marine AFC to help them with the long-term vision they have in mind.

The former footballer turned pundit has officially joined the National League North outfit in an advisory capacity.

Carragher was born in Bootle, but currently lives nearby Marine’s Rossett Park, situated in the north Liverpool coastal town of Crosby.

Marine finished the 2026/27 season sitting 12th, with 62 points form 46 games played, 11 points from the playoff places, and 10 points above the drop zone.

In the 2021/22 season, they won promotion to the 7th tier via the Northern Premier League Division One West playoffs, and then were promoted to the National League North after winning the 2023/24 Northern Premier League Premier Division playoffs. Their average attendances have gone from 446 to 1,300 in the space of six years.

As per BBC Sport, they also raised more than £300,000 in virtual ticket sales for when they played host to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup third round during the coronavirus lockdown back in 2021.

The club said in a statement: “Marine Football Club is proud to announce that Jamie Carragher will be supporting the club in an advisory capacity.

“The club has enjoyed rapid progression over the last five years, including two promotions, a historic Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur and an FA Trophy Semi-Final appearance.

“Jamie Carragher, a Crosby resident who made 737 appearances for Liverpool FC, won the UEFA Champions League in 2005, and has since established himself as one of football’s leading analysts and commentators, will assist the board with his connections across football, business and the local community.”

James Leary, CEO of Marine FC, said: “This is a brilliant moment for Marine Football Club. Jamie is someone who genuinely cares about football and the local community, and he’s followed closely what we’ve been building here over the last few years.

His experience and relationships will be a huge help to the club as we continue moving Marine forward over the coming years.”

Jamie Carragher said: “Marine is a proper community football club with good people involved and a clear vision for where it wants to go. I’ve enjoyed watching the progress the club has made over recent years and I’m pleased to be able to support the club in an advisory capacity going forward.”

The club statement added: “Marine FC is embarking on its most ambitious period to date, including plans for a new stadium and continued growth both on and off the pitch. The club is actively exploring partnerships with like-minded individuals and organisations who share Marine’s long-term vision and want to be part of its journey. Those interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact ceo@marinefc.com.

“The club has secured an option on land for a new stadium development, with a full planning application expected to be submitted to Sefton Council by September.
