Jamie Carragher calls out Hillsborough chants that could be heard live on air as Luton Town played out a draw with Liverpool.
Carra condemned the songs from inside the ground on Sunday night, with supporters in the away end previously being subjected to songs that mock the tragedy that occurred back in April 1989.
97 people lost their lives in an FA Cup tie at the home of Sheffield Wednesday 34 years ago, with the club continuing to acknowledge those that have passed on an annual basis.
Clearly heard on the TV coverage the disgusting Hillsborough-related taunt of Liverpool by Luton fans; a disgrace that shames football itself.
Good to hear @Carra23 taking a moment on commentary to call it out.#LUTLIV

Fans of opposing teams tend to use the tragedy to mock Liverpool fans and that appears to have happened in the Premier League clash at Kenilworth Road.
Jamie Carragher explains that he knows rivalries exist, but claimed those who attend football games have to be “better than that.”
Fans inside the ground and viewers watching the game raised the point of hearing such chants like “Feed the scousers”, “Sign on”, “Always the victims”.
He said live on commentary: “At the start of the season I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together. I have just heard something a couple of times in this game.
“Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that.”
He tweeted after the game: “Every fan base has been guilty at one time or another of tragedy chanting. This is not about point scoring between fans, it’s about football fans coming together as one & saying enough is enough & that this is not acceptable anymore ❤️”
Three minutes before kick-off your winner for the “Sign On” bingo this afternoon. A very early entrant, it must be said

#LFC free-kick into the box drops to Salah but his difficult first-time volley is well over. “You fucking fraud” shouts the Luton fan behind us, who then sings the national anthem

“Always the victims” sing the Luton fans, who earlier had reminded the #LFC support why their team had never played in Europe

The Premier League said at the beginning of the season that any tragedy chanting by any sets of fans would be heavily punished in an effort to stop it.
A statement read: “Premier League clubs unanimously agreed at the Annual General Meeting today to a series of new measures to address the unacceptable rise in anti-social behaviour involving football tragedy-related chanting, gesturing, graffiti, online abuse and other behaviours last season.
“The measures are the output of a cross-football working group which was set up in December to explore available options to challenge the normalisation of such distasteful behaviours and incidents. The issues have continued to cause significant distress to the victims’ families, survivors and affected club supporters, in addition to damaging the reputation of the clubs involved and football in England and Wales.
“The action will focus on criminal prosecution, the regulatory environment, enforcement, online abuse, education and communications.”
The game itself saw Luton go close to a famous win but it’s still a memorable point, with Luis Diaz coming off the bench and immediately got Liverpool level, overcome with emotion at the final whistle as he lifts up his kit to show his T-shirt calling for ‘freedom for my father’.
Nunez also saw a stunning miss from a few yards out before luton got the opener. Chong then tapped home a stunning Luton counter after Liverpool wanted handball.
The result now means Liverpool are 3rd, with 24 points from 11 games, and three points behind leaders Man City, with Tottenham in action on Monday. Luton are 17th with 6 points, level on points with Bournemouth in the relegation zone.
Luton’s Chiedozie Ogbene, speaking to Sky Sports: “I was praying for a VAR check [for the late equaliser] but it was a clean goal. You can’t fault the effort tonight. We are going in slightly disappointed we didn’t get a win against a very good Liverpool team and that is how far we have come.
“If you can’t win, don’t lose and that is what we did today. It is all about momentum. We are trying to create an atmosphere here. The manager said before to believe in the game plan and be patient. In this league you just have to take your moments.”
Carragher is right there. Luton far from alone in this, but the area has had many of its own socio-economic issues, and it’s sad to see fans sing all that stuff. It goes beyond any sort of club banter.

Well done Jamie Carragher for speaking up on the Luton fans and the tragedy chanting. Disgraceful from Luton. #LUTLIV

Important intervention from @Carra23 to call out Hillsborough-related ‘tragedy chanting’ from supporters. Words that should have no place in society. New regulations rightfully ensure this shameful behaviour can lead to stadium bans and arrests.
