Absolute scenes as Crystal Palace win their first ever European final

Absolute scenes in Leipzig as Crystal Palace win their first ever European final, a 1-0 victory against Ray Vallecano.

After neither side had a shot on target in the first half, Jean-Philippe Mateta’s 50th minute goal made the difference in the UEFA Conference League Final on Wednesday night.

Palace almost doubled their lead in the space of two minutes, Pino seeing his free kick come back off the post, the ball then went across the goal and struck the other post.

It was a game that meant everything to the two clubs, the passion from both sets of supporters, but it was a night to remember for Palace, and tears for Rayo Vallecano.

Paul Robinson (reporting on the game for BBC Radio 5 Live at Leipzig Stadium, as per BBC Sport’s Live blog) “What scenes inside this stadium. Incredible from the Crystal Palace supporters.

“We said Wharton needs to be involved a bit more and the pitch just opened up in front of him and he just had a strike.

“The keeper makes a real mess of it, two palms on it but he puts it right into the path of Mateta. He sticks his leg out and it goes into the back of the net.”

Lucy Ward (reporting for TNT Sports): “They gave Wharton the time and space to run with the ball, it’s fantastic play and no one is engaging him.

“He has shot and Mateta reacts brilliantly, he probably wasn’t expecting it to come so quickly.

“It was halfway up his leg, no one cares. We just got covered in beer, we don’t care! It’s brilliant from Palace.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta, speaking to TNT Sports: “I feel fantastic! I feel fantastic! We did it! First time in Europe and we did it. Now I just want to celebrate. This guy [Joel Ward] has to celebrate with us.

“We gave everything. I told you about the intensity they will have and I am tired right now, I gave everything. That’s why we won today.

“I am always with the fans. They have supported me a lot as a player. They are always behind us. We did it for them too.”
