Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand issue ‘personal’ insults getting into Twitter row

Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand issue ‘personal’ insults at each other when getting into a Twitter row over Cristiano Ronaldo.

The two pundits have been involved in a spat over comments on about the out of favour Manchester United player with Carragher tweeting on Monday morning about Erik ten Hag’s decision not to play the forward in the Manchester derby, saying that claims the Dutchman got it wrong leaving him out are ‘laughable’.

Ferdinand replied, asking if Carragher was still annoyed Ronaldo didn’t shake his hand at recently at Old Trafford during a recent Sky Sports broadcast, before Carragher replied calling Ferdinand a ‘fan boy’ of Ronaldo.

Carragher initially claimed that ‘Rashford’s pace on the counter attack’ was ‘the way to go’ in the game, referencing Man Utd’s 4-0 loss at Brentford earlier in the season, in which Ronaldo played.

Ferdinand responded: ‘Carra you still upset he didn’t shake ur hand at Old Trafford? The hardest thing to do in football is score goals…’ accompanied by a video of the former United defender defending his former team-mate.

In a clip from Ferdinand’s FIVE show, the 43-year-old said: ‘You can’t have your top goalscorer, who gets 20 or 25 goals a season, on the bench. I’m sorry.

‘People keep talking about it. Why are we so concerned with what people don’t do all the time? What’s he good at?

‘The hardest thing to do in football is score goals, and this guy does that just as good, if not better than anybody.’

Carragher took offence to the comment, getting back at Ferdinand and accusing him of sucking up to the forward.

‘No I’m delighted it went viral!’ said Carragher in response to Ferdinand’s comment about shaking Ronaldo’s hand.

‘Rio I know how it works, he’s your mate & you/Evra & the rest are on the group WhatsApp & he asks you to come out & defend him.

‘Don’t be his fan boy you’re Rio Ferdinand for FFS!!’

Ferdinand then replied: ‘What WhatsApp group?! Leave off lad… I want this same energy with Roy Keane when ya next in the studio ffs. Stop getting bullied.’

Despite the Twitter spat, Carragher did as always end on a playful note about Ferdinand as Sky’s coverage of Leicester’s 4-0 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest concluded on Sky Sports.

Working as a pundit with Gary Neville and presenter Dave Jones, they nodded to next week’s Monday Night Football show – which includes Roy Keane as a special guest.

‘We’ve got two of your mates on next week,’ Neville quipped.

‘Have we got Roy Keane on?’ asked Carragher, to which Jones replied: ‘With a bit of luck!’

As the banter played on, Gary Neville ‘You’ll get bullied again!’ to Carragher.

Carra couldn’t help but tease Neville by replying: He wants to get in that Whatsapp group Rio!

As the duo and Jones laughed, Neville finished with: ‘Oh yeah, can you add me to the Whatsapp group please Rio!?’

This is what social media users said as Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand issue ‘personal’ insults getting into a Twitter row over Cristiano Ronaldo…

@paddystu88: Ronaldo has 1 goal so far. It’s not like united missed loads of chances where the game could of been won. Ronaldo wouldn’t have offered anything different in that game so it’s pointless talking about him. This is getting a bit like the blind faith Rio and Neville had in ole!

@Utdadam3: Can we just establish that we conceded 6 goals yesterday but for some reason Ronaldo has become the main talking point, despite us winning our last 4 games without him

@Bigalanh5: They would have arguably conceded even more with Ronaldo! Look what happened at Brentford. The only realistic chance Utd had was to defend as a low block and counter attack, therefore Rashford’s pace would, in theory, been better suited

@bobbyisabitbob: Could have brought on prime R9, was still going to lose. Futile discussion

@amnsaints: Worry about Liverpool genius, still making excuses for them!

@Mohamed_therad: We lost to Man City because of the difference of quality and also our players lacking the desire to win we all know this squad can’t play the way ten Hag wanted them to play I think in a few years if the club backs the manager we can see a different Man United

@EmmaHam41: The problem was a gulf in class. We never got the chance to get it out of our half. Nothing to do with the counter attack. Rashford didn’t even get a sniff.

@TenHagBalI (Replying to @Carra23): You speak sense in this circumstance but very very hypocritical from you, not once have you called out your mate Steven Gerrard & how he’s doing with Aston Villa. Has a worse record there than Gary Neville had at Valencia btw. So you don’t have the right to say the ‘mate’ bit.

@Scott_Button12 (Replying to @Carra23): Do you go in the WhatsApp group with Stevie, Kenny and the rest of you with no premier league title and talk about the time you went all righteous defending racism and acting like Suarez was the victim as Evra and Utd didn’t roll over and accept the racism?

@e_heritage10: Thank the flipping lord someone said this, Jamie is BANG ON!! For years the these ex Man U boys have just been defending friends of theirs and not actually talking any sense

@wayne_keating: Why do they go on as if Keane would thump you if you disagree with him? Redknapp, Carragher, Richards have all had run-ins with him on Sky without Keane swinging punches. The ex United pros act like Keane’s awe-struck younger brothers, it’s so weird

@notthisagainrob: Bullying is no laughing matter Rio. Disgusting to even think about laughing at it. Some role model

@jordanrammy: @rioferdy5 Ronaldo had a tough year all he does is get stick. If he plays he scores goals! Guys carried on playing after losing a son not something id of been able to do with a clear mind anyways! Need to get off his back @Carra23

@5tephenTownsend: Tbf, Carragher is right on this one. Ronaldo is not the Ronaldo of Madrid or the one you played with. He hasn’t been up to standard this season and as JC said, Rashford is more effective on the counter. Ronaldo wouldn’t have changed the result. We may have even scores fewer.

@KyleMyles0326: Lol Carragher still bitter Ronaldo mugged the little him off and you could tell he wanted to shake Ronaldo’s hand. He’s fixated bless him
