James McClean causes a stir as he goads Wimbledon fans and vents disgust of Rishi Sunak

Wrexham player James McClean causes a stir across social media as he goads AFC Wimbledon fans then vents his disgust of Rishi Sunak.

Saturday afternoon saw the 34 year old whip in a corner, with Steven Fletcher getting on the end of it to grab Wrexham’s opener against the Wombles at the Racecourse Ground.

James McClean kept up the on-pitch antics as he could be seen on fan footage heading straight over to the away end to wind a few up on 61 minutes before helping set up Paul Mullin, who made it 2-0 shortly after to keep up pressure on League Two leaders Stockport.

McClean said after the win against Wimbledon, as per The Leader: “It’s a great start to the year but we are in January. It’s boring and a cliche but nothing is won in January.

“We have got to keep that momentum going. Momentum in football is a great thing.

“I have had that winning momentum but I have also had it the other way.

“When you are winning you want to keep that going at all cost.

“First half we weren’t anywhere near our best. Credit to Wimbledon for that because they made it tough.

“We demand a lot from each other and we knew we weren’t quite at it in the first half.

“At half-time we spoke about it and knew that we had more gears in us. They had a chance at the start of the second half but we upped our levels and I thought we were comfortable enough after getting the first goal.

“It’s the third club I’ve played with Steven at and he has always been a quality player.

“My job is to put the ball in the box with a bit of quality and when you see the ball coming to Steven, you would put your house on him to score and that’s exactly what he did.

“It obviously helps when you play with someone over the years, you get to know their game.”

McClean looked ahead to Wrexham’s next game, a trip to Newport.

“You want to keep that winning momentum going and at the moment we have got that winning momentum,” McClean added.

“But we have got another tough game this weekend so we have got to keep that going.

“When you have got a dressing room with quality and a lot of character, you have got a lot of confidence going into games.”

McClean also got people talking over the weekend when he turned his focus away from football and took aim at Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, with James calling him a ‘vile, horrible weasel of a man’.

He uploaded a clip of Rishi talking on Sky News, with the PM saying the UK acted in “self-defence” after military strikes in Yemen.

“Over the last month, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea that’s putting innocent lives at risk,” Sunak said.

“It’s disrupting the global economy, and it’s also destabilising the region. And in that time we’ve also seen the single biggest attack on a British navy warship that we’ve seen in decades.”

“Initial indications are that those strikes have been successful. We’ll continue to monitor the situation. But it’s clear that this type of behaviour can’t be met without a response,” he responded when asked what happens if the strikes didn’t stop Houthi attacks on shipping.

This caught the attention of McClean, who decided to share Sky News’ Instagram story, and captioned his post: “Vile horrible wee weasel of a man, the innocent lives that Israel have taken on a daily basis in Palestine over the past few months, which of course he’s in favour for tho do not matter.”

McClean is one of over 200 best-known sports stars who have signed an open letter calling for the immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to show solidarity with Palestinian people.

The Irish Sport for Palestine open letter reads: “We have come together as members of the Irish sporting community to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people and to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

“For over three months, we have watched in horror as over 22,330 Palestinians, more than 9,000 of them children, have been murdered, and countless thousands more catastrophically injured, while 90% of the population in Gaza have been forcibly displaced.

“We ask: How many athletes, sports people, trainers, and those children aspiring to be, have been murdered or displaced by the horrific Israeli violence?

“For decades, Israel has targeted Palestinian sports people, preventing them from travelling to competitions, shooting and maiming them, killing them, and destroying their facilities.

“Israel continues to target Palestinian athletes, especially footballers, many of them children and youths, and has destroyed sporting facilities in Gaza and the West Bank.

“Israeli occupation forces last month turned Gaza’s Yarmouk Stadium into a detention centre, where Palestinian men, youths and children have been held without charge, terrorised, and abused. The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has called on the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), international and continental confederations and all relevant bodies “to take urgent measures to end the gross violations of the Israeli occupation against the Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza, and to subject it to legal accountability.”

“The PFA has appealed for an international investigation into the treatment of Palestinian athletes and sports facilities amidst reports of Israeli forces violating the Olympic charter by targeting sports clubs.

“What is happening in Gaza is genocide. A system of Apartheid – a crime against humanity – is being imposed on Palestinians. Despite criticism by the UN, respected international organisations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, International Rescue Committee and Medecins Sans Frontieres, and many more, Israel has made clear its intention to continue to violate international law.

“We encourage all sports people across the island to join our call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, for the illegal siege to be lifted, for humanitarian aid to be delivered, and for no further forced displacement of Palestinians.

“We advocate for sports clubs, spaces, fan groups and communities to sign up to become Apartheid Free Zones and boycott Israeli products.

“We call on Sport Ireland, the Olympic Federation of Ireland, and all relevant sporting bodies to call for an international investigation into Israel’s violation of the Olympic charter and impose sanctions.

“We call on the Irish government to enact the Occupied Territories Bill, and the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill. We urge them to support the investigation of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court into the situation in Palestine and submit a case of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza to the International Court of Justice, as South Africa has just done.

“After 75 years of racist oppression, Palestinians deserve freedom, justice, and equality. This is a crucial moment for humanity. The time to act is now. We must stand together, and we must not fail.”
