Jack Grealish deletes old tweet about Real Madrid straight after losing Champions League tie

Jack Grealish deletes an old tweet of his about Real Madrid – straight after losing the Champions League tie on Wednesday night.

Man City’s £100m signing saw a flurry of his opportunities prevented from going in at close range before going on to see his side collapse with minutes remaining.

Leading 4-3 from the first leg at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s side looked to be on course for to set up at meeting with Liverpool in the final with Riyad Mahrez giving them a 1-0 lead in Spain.

However, two late goals from Rodrygo sent the tie to extra-time with Karim Benzema’s penalty sealing an astonishing comeback for Madrid.

Grealish was brought on in the second half of normal time and had two golden chances to kill the match when the scoreline was at 1-0.

He had a shot cleared off the line by Ferland Mendy, then Thibaut Courtois produced a brilliant save to deny the former Aston Villa player.

After the game, an eight year old tweet from Grealish resurfaced online and quickly gained thousands of likes.

Posted on the 23rd of April 2014 – the same night Real Madrid took on Bayern Munich in another Champions League semi-final – Grealish posted: “Hala Madrid!!!”

Well the post has since been taken down, literally minutes after the full time whistle.

Many would argue that Grealish has struggled to live up to his £100m price tag since coming on the scene at Man City last summer and the England international was even criticised by Arsene Wenger after Wednesday’s defeat.

“When you look at 1-1, when Grealish is against [Dani] Carvajal, he is passed easily, too easily. He must absolutely fight to stop that cross,” Wenger told beIN SPORTS.

“You do not want the ball in the box, anything can happen when everybody goes forward.

“That is where City did not secure the game, defending on the sides. Because they conceded, even when you look when Benzema gave the ball back, they didn’t really attack the ball the defenders, they made big mistakes.”

Real Madrid: 8.0 – Courtois, 7.0 – Carvajal, 6.6 – Militão, 7.0 – Nacho, 7.3 – Mendy, 6.7 – Casemiro, 6.4 – Kroos, 7.2 – Valverde, 5.8 – Modric, 6.5 – Júnior, 8.2 – Benzema

Subs: 6.2 – Vallejo, 6.1 – Ceballos, 6.2 – Vázquez, 6.7 – Asensio, 6.8 – Camavinga, 8.5 – Rodrygo.

Man City: 5.6 – Ederson, 7.0 – Walker, 6.2 – Dias, 6.3 – Laporte, 7.5 – Cancelo, 7.1 – Bruyne, 7.4 – Silva, 6.8 – Rodri, 8.1 – Mahrez, 6.6 – Jesus, 6.4 – Foden

Subs: 6.2 – Sterling, 6.6 – Grealish, 7.4 – Zinchenko, 6.0 – Gündogan, 5.9 – Fernandinho

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola told BT Sport: “We were close. We were close. But in the end, we could not reach it.

“It is simple. In the first half, we did not have game, we were not good enough. But we did not suffer much. After we scored the goal we were better. We found our tempo and our game and the players were comfortable.

“It is not like in the last 10 minutes they attack and attack and you suffer. It didn’t happen. They put a lot of players in the box, with [Eder] Militao, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Benzema and they put in crosses and scored two goals.

“We didn’t play our best, but it is normal, a semi-final, the players feel the pressure and wanting to do it. Football is unpredictable, it is a game like this. We have to accept it.

“Now we need to process that and come back, with our people at home and the last four games we have.”

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BT Sport: “I cannot say we are used to living this kind of life, but what happened tonight it happened against Chelsea and also against PSG.

“If you have to say why, it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone.

“The game was close to finished and we managed to find the last energy we had. We played a good game against a strong rival. When we are able to equalise we had a psychological advantage in extra time.

“I have no time to think about this [losing the game]. It was difficult as City had control of the game but the last opportunity we were able to go to extra time.

“I am happy to be there in the final, in Paris against another great rival. We are used to it. It will be a fantastic game for football.”
