“It’s unacceptable and embarrassing” – James Maddison reacts after Spurs lose to Chelsea and the situation Tottenham find themselves in.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side knew a win would ensure Premier League survival, while a point would also make them virtually safe due to the goal difference.
But it wasn’t to be and now the fight to stay up goes down to the final day of the season, Tottenham, two points ahead of West Ham, host Everton on Sunday, the Hammers also welcome Leeds.
Spurs’ James Maddison said to Sky Sports, as per BBC Sport’s live blog: “We knew any sort of result would be very beneficial for us in the battle. It wasn’t to be. We pushed hard in the last 20 minutes. It was probably a pretty even game. I don’t remember them having many chances.
Coming on at 2-0 down: “It’s an awful time. You want to get on the pitch at 1-0 and affect it. It’s a lot more difficult at 2-0. It was a bit of a dagger as I was coming on.
“I’ve been out for a long time, so I’m not going to be at my fluid best. I’ve had a massive injury and you have to respect the injury a bit. I’m going to do what I can on Sunday.
On creativity: “It’s my job, it’s what I’m paid to do. I haven’t played this season, but when I do, it’s what we have to do. Hopefully, when I’m on the pitch, I have to try and help the team.
“Anyone who has worked in football or has had this injury, it’s not easy to drop back in. It would be catastrophic for my career if something were to happen.
On Sunday: “We have to give everything for the club, for the badge, for the fans. It’s a bit embarrassing that we’re in this position. We’re going to need our fans, who were unbelievable tonight. I think we have the best away following in the league.”
Sky Sports‘ Jamie Redknapp said: “Tottenham are sleepwalking towards relegation. I said it earlier this season. The only thing that’s saved them is a couple of good results.
“When I say good, they beat Wolves, and they beat an Aston Villa side who had seven players out at the time.
“Now they’ve got to find a way to win a game at home. Their home form has been horrendous all season. They’ve had no quality and no character to win a football match.
“Now they’ve got to find a way to beat Everton. David Moyes will be fuming after the weekend and he’ll be going there thinking, ‘We’ve got to get something out of this game.’
“I’d rather be playing Leeds at home than Everton.”
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi said to Sky Sports: “We created a first chance to score with Tel. It was a big save for Sanchez. Then we concede one great goal because Fernandez, a big player, we could do something better. Then we stay in the game until the second goal, we lost a stupid ball. We conceded a second goal. But before the second goal, we created a big big chance with Richarlison.
“I think we played a very good game. We lost.
“But now is not the time to think too much of this game. We have to prepare for the next game. We play in our stadium with our fans. With our qualities, with character, with pride and courage, we have to play. But I am positive because today we played a good game.”
De Zerbi speaking to Sky Sports on if he has any concerns around his players’ resilience: “We had a great reaction after the first and second goals. In my time we made eight points in six games. We deserve more points, we lost two points with Brighton. Now we are not to analyse anything, we are to prepare for the last game in the best way.”
On if he has seen enough to have confidence that they’ll survive: “At the beginning of the game, yes. The end of the game, the same. The last twenty minutes we played with more qualities because Maddison is not a normal player for us. I think we are alive, with the right spirit. Normally we can’t win every game because if we stay in this place of the table we have had some problems. We have all qualities to achieve our target.”

Spurs’ Joao Palhinha said to Sky Sports: “We have to [use the defeat as fuel for final game]. That’s the reality. We cannot think too much about the result. We more than played well. We needed the result to finish this thing that we have been living for a long time. This team needed a different result, we deserved it.
“It’s been a tough season for us with a lot of things happening inside the club. The reality is we have a final on Sunday. We want to keep Tottenham in the Premier League and we will go with everything. I don’t think I need to speak too much about this game because we wanted to win. We deserved more, it’s a big frustration.
“We will have Tottenham in the Premier League next season, I don’t have any doubt about that because it’s where the club belong. Let’s go with everything.”
De Zerbi speaking to Sky Sports on whether he regrets not making his triple substitution earlier: “The ball was inside the pitch. Yes, two minutes before. But you know the physical condition of James Maddison. He’s not available to play more than 20 or 25 minutes. I was waiting to spend two or three more minutes and to make this change.
“Like Djed Spence and Pape Sarr – all three players came on to the pitch very well, they changed the energy. James Maddison can’t play more than 20 or 25 minutes. It’s just two weeks with us. But it’s important in the last 20 minutes.”
Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane said to BBC Match of the Day: “The result was the most important thing. I thought we played really well. We were struggling with energy and intensity after Saturday. We needed to fight and stick together and I thought we did that really well.
“We haven’t been able to plan because of the quick turnaround. Saturday was emotional because we were in the game. It’s about switching off on the Sunday, coming in for one day to prep for Tottenham, who are fighting for their lives. We had to match them with fight, grit and determination.
On rivalry with Spurs: “It was mentioned at times about the intensity and the electricity that this would feel. Some players in the changing rooms knew what it would be but we couldn’t get too emotional.”
After Chelsea went 1-0 up, Jamie O’Hara said while on talkSPORT: “You better not get that Ange mask out. I will rip it off. It’s funny how you lot decide you want to turn up. You’ve been absolute guff all season.
He continued: “We’re absolutely gone. We’re here for the taking, we’re gonna get done 4-0 here. We’re absolutely garbage. Every single game. Every time I watch us, absolute crap! Crap FC. We are all over the place.”
On watching Arsenal win the Premier League title at the same time: “This is worse than divorce this.”
On Spurs going 2-0 down: “You can see that happening. It is a joke, you could see it a mile off. I told you: ‘We’ll go 2-0 down.
“Muani – get out of our club! This team is absolutely garbage. It is so bad! It is disgusting how bad this team is. I cannot believe this team that I’m watching. How do I support this team?”
