Bruno Fernandes made it 1-1 with ease and sent City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in the wrong direction. As United celebrated their goal, an object from the crowd hit Lindelof near his eye.

The centre-back fell to the ground holding his face, before being checked by teammates and Fernandes yelled furiously at someone who couldn’t be seen on camera.

Fernandes protested to Paul Tierney but he ordered that the game be resumed.

City captain Gundogan was on hand again to get the match winner on 51 minutes.

Speaking on commentary for the BBC, Jermaine Jenas said on the incident: “Something’s been thrown and it’s hit Lindelof, you don’t want to see that. We’ve got a brilliant game on our hands here, it’s the last thing you want to see.”

“It’s been a really good and interesting first half,” Alan Shearer told the BBC.

“You plan all week from a Manchester United point of view and then after 12 seconds those plans you think okay, let’s just calm down, there’s not much we could have done about that goal. Other than that it was a performance I expected from Manchester United.

“Been tough, been hard, been disciplined, and tried to make it an ugly game, if you like. Whatever you think of the decision – and we’ll get into it – they’ve got back into this game.”
