Ipswich Town sack stewarding agency over incident with convicted paedophile at match

Ipswich Town have chosen to sack their stewarding agency over an incident with a convicted paedophile at a recent League One match.

Fans recognised Adam Wyles, who in 2015 had been given a community order and a five-year sexual harm prevention order restricting his contact with children.

He had been convicted of possession of indecent images of children, working in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand at the game against Fleetwood Town and made the club aware via social media.

CLUB STATEMENT:

The safety of all visitors at Portman Road is the Club’s number one priority

The Club has discovered that an individual working for an external stewarding agency last night at Portman Road has previous convictions that should have prevented them from any employment, both directly or through an agency, with the Club.

This is absolutely unacceptable, and as a result, the Club has terminated its agreement with the external agency with immediate effect. A review of all other agencies’ recruitment policies is now underway to ensure this does not happen again.

The safety of all visitors at Portman Road is the Club’s number one priority.

One Tuesday, the 6th of December, the man was convicted for two breaches of a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) after contacting two girls.

An arrest was made in the Hopton area on Saturday, December 3, on suspicion of breach of a SHPO and was taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Ipswich Star report how Adam Wyles, 35, of no fixed abode was subsequently charged with two breaches of SHPO – one where contact was made with a 15-year-old female in Saxmundham and a second in Leiston where he was in contact with children under the age of 16 years.

The original sexual harm prevention order was made at court on the 24th of April in 2020.

He appeared before Suffolk Magistrates Court on Monday the 5th of December and subsequently pleaded guilty to both counts of the breach and was remanded to appear before Ipswich Crown Court to be sentenced on a date to be confirmed.

This is what social media users said as Ipswich Town sack their stewarding agency over an incident with a convicted paedophile at the match…

@IpswichCulture: Really pleased to see this dealt with as quickly as it has been.

@Paulafr07825175: These things happen and then improvements are made for the future. Well done @IpswichTown

@DaveD92: While you getting rid of things, can you get rid of the tape as we come through the turnstile. Proper busting for a slash last night but cos I’m in the Upper tier, i had to run up 3 flights of stairs. I’m a fat man, my body is not designed to run

@Phil_Pritchard: Good work… another minor gripe about one of the external steward; not it’s right they can jump the queue at half-time to get served first before paying fans (SBR Lower)

@ReactionTown: Brilliant, fast action from the club

@thomdichoi: The club cancelling the contract with the external company will for sure make the others step up their protocols. However, seeing some of the ‘stewards’ in place this season 60yo, 5ft Brenda’s in front of section 6 proves that it is is not towns no1 priority.

@leefaichney: Well done for dealing with this. Security seem to just spend their time watching the TVs on the concourse too

@Footymad2020: Great work itfc to sort the issue out so quickly

@Luke8644: Quick, decisive action by the club. Fair play, can’t say they don’t listen! #itfc

@IpswichTownFans: Swift action, very good from the club. #itfc

@BonoITFC: Kudos to the club for taking swift action on this matter – It was the right thing to do. #itfc

@ThatsJpToYou: The club have responded appropriately. We move on.

@itfc_louis: This is absolutely fucking disgusting, how was he even aloud to step anywhere near the ground with innocent kids in the stadium.

@LPrentice44: Good to see the club acting quickly on this, but fucking hell, there is something that needs doing about Baby Beater still getting into games

@harvedwards11: Great work lads 👏 #itfc
