Ipswich fans throw items at taunting Norwich player Jon Rowe and car with Delia Smith inside

Ipswich Town fans decided to throw items at taunting Norwich player Jon Rowe and a car with Canaries owner Delia Smith inside.

Tensions grew pre-match, whether it was in the pub or outside the ground, as you would expect for the first East Anglian Derby since 2019.

Norwich made the 40 mile trip to Ipswich on Saturday, and while there had been nothing but playful banter and not too much trouble between both sets of fans leading up to the Championship fixture, it seems Delia Smith and the other Norwich officials made the mistake of following on behind the Ipswich bus.

Home fans had gathered round on the streets to show their support for those on the Ipswich coach, and then made their feelings known when seeing that Delia and co had arrived shortly after.

Smith was in a grey BMW, making it’s way for the car park at Portman Road, but it had to be protected by a police escort with authorities making sure they kept home fans back.

That didn’t stop a number of fans from chucking things at the vehicle, one being a can of beer which landed on the bonnet.

In days leading up to the game, Norwich’s Jonathan Rowe couldn’t help but rile opposition fans up, posting ‘Bring on the f*****g derby. #ncfc’

And it seems that he had a derby to remember, netting twice in one game for the first time in his career as Ipswich and Norwich played out a 2-2 draw.

Nathan Broadhead put the hosts ahead on 34 minutes, when a corner from the right was half-cleared and then headed back into the box by Massimo Luongo to George Hirst, with the ball dropping for Broadhead to meet the bouncing ball perfectly and smashed it home.

Then Rowe got his first of the two on 40 minutes, he tried to attack Sam McCallum’s ball in from the right and ended up down on the ground, before getting back up and attempted an acrobatic volley, it deflected off Luke Woolfenden and in the back of the net. Of course, Rowe did his taunts towards the home crowd, shushing them with a number of items throw at the celebrating Norwich players down by the corner.

Just after the break, Norwich turned the game around, Shane Duffy winning a header, teed up Jon Rowe, who saw another deflected shot go past Vaclav Hladky.

Wes Burns got Ipswich level again on 61 minutes, with Burns receiving the ball from the left flank, and sent it low through Sam McCallum’s leg, going into the bottom corner.
