‘I’m lost for words’ – Truro and Aldershot take issue with several controversial refereeing calls during the National League fixture.
Aldershot, down to nine men after red cards to goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst (first half) and Cameron Hargreaves (late bookings), fought back for a 2-2 draw at Truro on Wednesday night.
The Shots went one up thanks to a Kwame Thomas header three minutes into first half added time, but Truro levelled through Ryan Law and then went ahead with Tyler Harvey’s 85th minute goal. But Aldershot’s James Henry scored a 97th-minute penalty to salvage a point.
Aldershot have since announced: “We’re pleased to confirm that, following a successful appeal, the red card shown to Marcus Dewhurst on Wednesday night has been overturned and his suspension rescinded.”

Truro City boss John Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall: “We’ve got ourselves ahead, and then to concede with seconds to go is criminal from our point of view.
“I know there was a clear penalty on Dom [Johnson-Fisher] that the referee should have given but, even with that, there’s no way they should get a chance with two minutes to go.
“I’m disappointed, the players are disappointed, everybody’s disappointed, but we can’t do anything about it – all we can do is take something from the fact that, again, we performed well.”
He also spoke on some of the refereeing calls, including not being awarded a penalty for a challenge on Truro substitute Johnson-Fisher in the box shortly before Aldershot were given a controversial spot kick at the other end.
“I think there were just bizarre decisions, some fouls that were given that I didn’t think were fouls, Aldershot didn’t think certain things were fouls.
“Obviously the penalty, Aldershot have said it’s a clear penalty for us, but it’s sad when you’re talking about the referee, you don’t want to do that.
“But I’m more disappointed in the way that we’ve conceded that second goal.”
Aldershot’s Hugo Langton said: “Absolutely crazy night of football. Some of the things I’ve seen tonight, I’ve been doing this quite a long time and I’m a little bit lost for words.
“But the biggest thing of all is that, let’s be honest, we had eight men towards the end of the game. Two off and Will just couldn’t move. So with eight men, we’ve come back and taken something from the game and just wow to the players, the testament to the eight that were on the pitch and the ones that come off, everyone put in, they just give the football club their absolutely everything tonight. They’ve got big, big hearts. Well done them.”
Interviewer: “The game was pretty much taken away from us, perhaps through no fault of our own on the 40th minute with Marcus standing off.”
Hugo: “Well, I’ll be honest with you, I know I’ve got to be careful what I say, but my initial thought was that it was a foul on Marcus. And he’s pulled out a red card and I’m like, whoa, what’s going on here? And obviously we’ve seen it back and still, whoa, what’s going on here? people can only give what they see or what they think. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong.
“But to end up with a point here though, with all things considered, mental, mental night. By the way, I’m going to say the hundred, how many Shots fans? 176 on the Wednesday night in Truro. Wow, fair play to them. know, the reception they gave to players at the end was first class. So thank you to them all for coming.”
Interviewer: “And brilliant resilience from the lads, not only for the first goal after the initial red card, but obviously it goes without saying, like you said, with eight men to get that last minute penalty to keep pushing forward as well.
Hugo: “Yeah it’s funny because in training we’ve faced situations, we’ve done a lot of 10 v 11 so we’ve felt fairly comfortable with it to an extent you know maybe we need to do a bit more 8 v 11 but yeah look I can’t praise them enough for their effort tonight and I’m delighted for the players.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Truro and Aldershot take issue with controversial refereeing calls…
@Alasdair333: Think both sides can agree that referee shouldn’t ever ref again
@jonnysharpe: This game has been brought to you by the referee
@dbrewer59: One of the worst refereeing decisions I’ve ever seen in nearly 60 years of watching the Shots
@DanChilds94: Everything that’s wrong with football, the officials get worse every season and now the lower leagues you show your frustration cos of an awful decision and you get sin binned for 10 minutes like a naughty school kid games never been so gone and it’ll never get better
@shoshdog: Appeal the first red. Shocker of a decision. Well done SHOTS. Kept going til the end.
@berwynfinlay: Genuinely the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen, and that’s for both teams. I’m sure he’ll get reported, some of the decisions were beyond crazy, completely lost control.
@Matt_Beasley1: Robbed of 2 points by the ref
@ConnorSansom1: Be non contact sport in 5 years
@rileyjroberts: This could be worst decision I’ve ever seen
@PaulJackson123: Poor decision. The attacker was late, the goalie first. The attacker didn’t even try to get the ball, just screamed like he’d been shot. Terrible
One of those nights where you just take the point & move on. Credit to the lads for sticking at it right to the very end, though.
It’s not often both sets of fans boo the referee off in unison. A laughable performance. Onto Brackley at the EBB on Saturday. Up The Shots. 🔴🔵 https://t.co/L2VHZcT2gF
