Ilkeston Town praised for incredible offer to fans in upcoming fixture

Ilkeston Town have been praised for the incredible offer put to fans in the upcoming fixture against Stamford in the league.

The club offered all supporters FREE ENTRY to their home games against Chasetown and Stamford in the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands on Saturday the 11th of September and Saturday the 18th of December.

The first of those two games saw a crowd of 1,797 turn out to watch the hosts lose a thrilling 4-3 against Chasetown, with the club’s average from the season just below 700, though now that Ilkeston’s form has turned around for the better, they might just hit 2,000 with this second free entry turn out.

New Ilkeston Town signing Remaye Campbell believes promotion is a real possibility for the Robins next season.

At the time of speaking, September, they sat 5th in the eighth tier of English football, taking 10 points from 5 games played and were 5 points behind the then leaders Halesowen Town.

However fast forward to today and Ilkeston are top of the table with 44 points from 18 played, and one point clear of second place Belper Town, with Halesowen third with 39 points.

20-year-old striker Remaye Campbell has joined up with Martin Carruthers’ squad having been released by Notts County a loan spell at Grantham Town having been his most recent port of call. Here’s four goals he scored in one goal in 2018…

He stated back in May 2021: “The gaffer messaged me to come down for training about about three weeks ago now to have a look at me. I guess I impressed and it’s kind of gone quickly from there to be honest.

“The facilities for a club at this level are unreal and now with the 4G you can’t really go wrong. The manager was also a big factor because I know him and I know he’ll push to get the best out of me in the right way.”

He said: “Obviously being at a pro team is everyone’s dream and it helps a lot because you’re training everyday with quality players, so I think it’s helped me with the tactical and positional side of the game.

“My biggest influences I would say were my U16 coach who moved me from centre midfield to a striker, and then my U18s coach because he worked hard with me to get the best out of me. There was Kevin Nolan too because he was the first manager to give me a chance and believe in me to give me my first pro contract.”

He added: “I feel like I’ve come to grips with how the game’s played at this level now and hopefully I can kick on this year and score a lot of goals and win a lot of games with Ilkeston.

“The fans can expect a hard-working striker that will put his body about and be a handful and hopefully chip in with some goals too.

“I think we will do really well this season. The goal has to be to get promoted.”

For this season, Remaye Campbell has scored 10 goals, and is bound to score more to help get Ilkeston that all important promotion.

The club’s players drew yet more praise from their coaching staff after securing their ninth league win in a row on Saturday.

Assistant manager Wayne Hallcro said on the recent 5-1 win against Wisbech Town: “It’s always good when everyone is chipping in with the goals. We’ve got some very good goalscorers amongst us and even with Tommy coming in from a full-back position to score shows good willingness to get in the box and be positive.

“We look like the side we want to be at the moment in terms of when we get into the final third we always look like we’re going to cause defenders problems.”

Hallcro added that many factors have contributed to such a good run being put together, with team spirit one of the main ones.

He said: “The togetherness has been so pleasing. There’s a great team spirit and they’re doing the right things – listening, concentrating – and as a group we’ve got to a point where everyone knows their jobs which is a massive thing in football.

“If you can get everyone to do their jobs and work hard, we’re always going to be in a strong position.”

On this Saturday’s game against Sporting Khalsa, he added: “Khalsa are the only side that have really troubled us this season and they did a job on us on the day.

“But we’re in a better place now and I like to think that certain things that happened on that day won’t happen again.”
