Ian Wright hits back at ‘celebration police’ after Wayne Rooney’s comments on Arsenal

Ian Wright hits back at the ‘celebration police’ after Wayne Rooney’s comments on Arsenal who have reached the Champions League final.

Wayne Rooney and Jamie O’Hara have accused the Gunners of over-celebrating, Ian Wright however has since posted a video, telling the fans to ignore and enjoy it.”

There was praise from Rooney however, saying Mikel Arteta and the board deserve credit and added that he thinks it’s Arsenal’s year.

The last time Arsenal got to a Champions League final was in 2006, which ended in defeat to Barcelona. But this time around, they will play either Bayern Munich or PSG on the 30th of May in Budapest for the chance to win the trophy for the first time.

Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage, Wayne Rooney: “They deserve to be in this position, but they haven’t won it yet. I think the celebrations are a little bit too much. Celebrate when you win.”

Theo Walcott also on punditry duties, replied: “Incredible scenes here. I’ve never seen the Emirates quite like it – that connection with the fans we talk about…

“Some people here weren’t even born when they last got to the final and it’s one of those now ‘can they go that one step further?’ Maybe they are the team that can do it this year.”

Jamie O’Hara said on Sky Sports News: “Look, enjoy the moment. Football’s about moments. I remember when Spurs got there, I was actually here doing the show, I went mad, you know, and it’s an incredible moment. You’ve got yourselves to the final.

“There was a lot of celebrating. Like, the pyrotechnics they had at the Emirates, the fireworks going off. I was expecting them to bring out the Champions League final trophy then. Like, calm down. You ain’t won it yet.

“You’ve got to play one of the best teams. Of course celebrate. It’s a great night for Arsenal. And fair play to them. And you’ve got to enjoy it and the fans are going to enjoy it. But, like, calm down.

“Listen, it’s incredible moment and you celebrate it. I’m not saying don’t celebrate it. That’s what football’s about. Enjoy the moment. But you have to go and win it. Get it done, win it, and then celebrate.”

Speaking on social media, Ian Wright said: “Arsenal fans, let me tell you something: enjoy this.

“The celebration police will be out in force, do not get nicked!

“Enjoy yourselves, football‘s about moments and this is a big moment. Enjoy it.

“And let’s hope that in the final and after the final, we have another massive moment. It’s a great day, it’s a great day!”

Arsene Wenger said on beIN Sports: “I think Arsenal wanted it a bit more than Atleti and they were more decisive in the duals.

“We said before the game that to go to the final they needed to be strong defensively and they didn’t concede a goal tonight.

“They played a team who for 45 minutes absolutely needed to score a goal and they didn’t give them a chance.

“I believe it shows how strong Arsenal are defensively and how disciplined they are, as well a bit the limitations of Atletico, who were not good enough in the final third.

“In the end it’s a well-deserved win for Arsenal, there’s no doubt they were the better team over the two legs.

“They celebrate well tonight which is normal but you want to focus already on the final and the next games.

“The celebration is deserved and happiness is normal – absolutely normal – but the next step is to go to the final and win in.”
