Ian Evatt and Bolton fans were left frustrated by a ‘clear penalty’ not given in the 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.
Sheffield Wednesday extended the club-record unbeaten league run up to 23 matches but were held to Bolton.
Lee Gregory put the League One table-toppers ahead early on. But Victor Adeboyejo levelled up for his 15th goal for the season and his second for Bolton since the January transfer from Burton to Bolton.
After Dion Charles and Aden Flint got into a tangle in the box, the Trotters felt they were not given a clear penalty, as can be seen below…

Wanderers felt disappointed that they didn’t come away with maximum points, after seeing a penalty claim for the second half turned down by Purkiss.
After tangling with Aden Flint, Bolton’s Dion Charles fell in the box.
“It was a penalty,” Evatt said, as per ExaminerLive. “It can’t be anything else and I keep harping on about the big moments in these games and that is one that we can’t get wrong.
“I have a lot of respect for their team and their manager. They are good sports and good people. I have known Flinty and Baz (Barry Bannan) a long time, and Flinty said it was a penalty, couldn’t be anything else.
“It is really, really disappointing we didn’t get it because I thought we deserved it.”
Moore disagreed with what Evatt had to say. “I would imagine Ian will say it’s a penalty,” he said. “I would say it’s not a penalty because it’s not a natural coming together, he sort of stumbles. Big Flinty doesn’t actually touch him.
“Going down to ground, the boy [Charles] stumbles. I do think he could have got his shot off but he hit the deck.
“I don’t think it’s a penalty, Ian will think it’s a penalty so it’s 50/50 from the managers. It’s not a penalty.”
Evatt went on: “That looked like my team, the team we have coached,” he said.
“For large periods we had the ball, controlled the ball, caused them problems.
“They are always going to have shots and opportunities because that is the way they play, set plays, long throws, second balls. You know you will have to fight, scrap and defend your box really well. Other than the first 10 minutes I think we did that really well.
“We quietened down the crowd by managing the ball, which was really important, and I thought we looked a really good team.
“There is a lot to work on but, for me, we came away a bit from dominating the ball recently, but certainly away from home that is the best we have played all season.”

This is what Twitter users said as Ian Evatt and Bolton fans were left frustrated by a ‘clear penalty’ not given in the draw at Sheffield Wednesday…
@BWFCallmylife: Was behind the goal absolutely livid a pen all day
@matty_9393: 🤣🤣 these EFL refs really don’t know what they are doing. Joke
@WandererSmurf: How was that not a penalty 🤷♂️ Ref bottled that.
@BWFCBarlow85: 100% a penalty! Joke of a decision not to award it #bwfc
@craggybwfc: Penalty all day that, refs are shocking at this level.
@CharlieR945: How isn’t that a pen 🤣
@bwfc714:
Is it a foul inside the box? – Yes.
Is it a goalscoring opportunity? – Yes
Does defender make genuine attempt to play the ball? – No
Outcome has to be a penalty and red card.
@PanicPr0ne: How is that not a penalty?! Just how?! 🤯 #bwfc
@chris_brookes: Felt a bit disappointed with tonight – until I got back and saw a replay of that penalty claim on Flint 🥴😬 A point’ll do me just fine actually! #swfc
@simonbower78: On reflection I think we’ve got away with one tonight. On another day they get that penalty and we could’ve lost 2-1. We weren’t at our best, they were one of the better sides to come to Hillsborough this season. Take the point and move on. 👍🏻 #swfc
@WandererSmurf: Superb advert for L1 football from #bwfc & #swfc. Fantastic game to watch. Hope Bolton can join Sheff Wed in the Championship next season. Mind you, the less said about the refs appalling penalty decision the better.
@stanfordwhites: How’s that not a penalty? Flint is a donkey & tripped him #bwfc #swfc
@BwfcFans_: Good game we should have won that and would have with the penalty, Wednesday 100% going up all the best #bwfc #swfc
@BL1DERERS: PENALTY ALL DAY LONG 😡 #bwfc #WanderersLive
@damnberry: Because the EFL wanted us to lose mate
@RyanBWFC846: I feel like the ref was watching the legs closely for contact and that’s why he didnt see the hands
@OwenBWFC__: Baffled as to how Dion Charles didn’t get that penalty #bwfc
@WillowUfGood101: Commentary lads just said Wednesday got away with that one there. And that’s the home commentary!
@David43923838: Another hopeless referee @EFL @swfc @OfficialBWFC
@TommyG___: Stone wall penalty. Robbed a win away against top of league. #bwfc
Absolutely Marc. We needed and wanted a performance and particularly second half we absolutely got it. A point is a bonus but the performance is exactly what we needed more than anything

Flint catches Dion’s right leg but also has hold of his right arm, pulling him back throughout.
Definite penalty and should have been a red card as Flint doesn’t make any attempt to play the ball when Dion is in a goalscoring position. #bwfc pic.twitter.com/oJpGRe7NBj— BWFC714 (@bwfc714) March 18, 2023
🗣️ “It’s 100% a penalty, it can’t be anything else.”
Bolton manager Ian Evatt wasn’t happy his side had a penalty call dismissed in their 1-1 draw with league leaders Sheffield Wednesday.#BWFC #bbcfootball
