The National League table with PPG

How the National League table looks with PPG weighted home and away? Ollie Bayliss works out the latest proposed model with League One and Two set to end.

This is how the league tables would look from the Premier League to the top tier of non league football if they were worked out using a weighted points per game model to take into account home and away fixtures.

League One and League Two teams are expected to vote next week on how to decide promotion and relegation issues if and when, as expected, it is decided that there is no chance of play returning in those two divisions.

The EFL board has been presented with a series of different proposals, including following the model in Holland – to null and void with no promotion or relegation – or France – to work out the final standings using average points.

But it is understood that a new idea put forward by a League One club is gaining support.

The Athletic report: “The rationale for this idea is a non-weighted PPG calculation does not take into account the fact that some teams have four home games left, while others have six.

“This season across the Football League, the home team has won 46 per cent of the time, with away teams winning only 26 per cent of the games. Over the last six EFL seasons, the average PPG at home is 1.55, compared to 1.19 away.”

Stoke Sentinel have calculated how League One and League Two would look along with the Premier League and Championship, though they are expected to push on and get play out their remaining 2019/20 fixtures behind closed doors.

The points per game for each club at home and away have been worked out (points divided by number of games played) and then multiplied by the total number of games that should be played this season (19 in Premier League, 23 in Championship, 22 in League One and 23 in League Two).

The expected totals for home and away are then added together to give a total.
