How proposed League One eight-team mini-tournament could work? Yes, that is something that has been put forward by Darragh MacAnthony.
The Peterborough chairman was vocal at Friday’s meeting on the season, and in that discussion, he suggested an an extended playoffs including Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United, Portsmouth, Peterborough United, Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers, Gillingham.
The EFL’s framework said that the final League One table would be decided on an unweighted points-per-game basis.
↔ Coventry City – 1.970
↔ Rotherham United – 1.771
↑ Wycombe Wanderers – 1.735
↓ Oxford United – 1.714
↓ Portsmouth – 1.714
↓ Fleetwood Town – 1.714
↓ Peterborough United – 1.685
↓ Sunderland – 1.638
↔ Doncaster Rovers – 1.588
↑ Gillingham – 1.457
↓ Ipswich Town – 1.444
↔ Burton Albion – 1.37
↔ Blackpool – 1.285
↔ Bristol Rovers – 1.285
↑ Shrewsbury Town – 1.205
↓ Lincoln City – 1.200
↔ Accrington Stanley – 1.142
↑ Rochdale – 1.058
↓ MK Dons – 1.057
↔ AFC Wimbledon – 1
↔ Tranmere Rovers – 0.941
↔ Southend – 0.542
↔ Bolton Wanderers – 0.764
It would see the top two sides, Coventry City and Rotherham United, gain promotion.
These games would be live streamed on TV and would benefit Peterborough, Sunderland etc, but Ipswich would miss out via PPG.
It is still early days in getting a final decision, but it is understood that teams would play a quarter-final, semi-final and then a final in a bid to seal promotion. It remains unclear if it will be one or two-legged.
One way to decide who plays who could be similarly to how it usually is, the team in third plays those in tenth, the team in fourth would play the team in ninth etc.
It’s a proposed idea, so not set it stone and definitely going ahead just yet.
Even then, more than 50% of League One clubs would have to vote in favour of the playoffs being extended.
The next meeting takes place on Monday after a outcome couldn’t be agreed on Friday, we’ll then discover whether this proposal is deemed a serious option or not.
After finding out how the proposed League One eight-team mini-tournament could work, fans gave their thoughts…
@DMAC102 Hi Darragh. I don’t suppose this is your idea, by any chance? If so…..
Why can’t you, and Sunderland, just accept that with whatever formula used, the league positions still have you outside the play off places?

You’d think but Peterborough’s owner is the main one that’s blocking this whole thing as his side miss out on play offs

Why don’t Peterborough and Sunderland just go and make there own league! As both are not in the playoffs if PPG is taken! Clubs are an embarrassment to themselves. As for the posh owner well don’t get me started on him!
Roll on a party for Coventry though! ✈️✈️

How about they just promote Sunderland and Peterborough and F£&k the rest……yawn yawn from those massive clubs ??… need to get a grip, it’s a nightmare for all and no one asked for this, just accept the efl decision and get on with it.

Selfish as it sounds, by any measure Coventry have been the best team. So hopefully we don’t have to enter the Battle Royale!

Lots of sporting integrity there ?

Before people say it…no proposal to end the season will be fair , but if naturally finishing is impossible a solution has to be found … there will be winners and losers. Extending the playoff bracket seems to be a way to placate “toys being thrown out of the pram” by clubs
