Hartlepool manager hits out at National League regarding Weymouth

Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor hits out at the National League regarding the rearrangement of their match against Weymouth.

The Pools were informed just over a week ago that their National League encounter against The Terras, scheduled for the 24th of April, would be moved to the final day of the 2020-21 season on the 29th of May.

As it stands, the two sides are currently without a game on that date, the final day of the regular 2020-21 season, due to their respective fixtures against Dover Athletic and Macclesfield Town being cancelled after the initial fixture schedule was published in August 2020.

As mentioned by Hartlepool Mail, the National League board gave the fixture rearrangement the green light yet, as of Tuesday (April 20), nothing has been confirmed.

“There’s absolutely no clarity on the situation and I’m not happy about it,” Challinor said.

“We picked a team on Saturday [at Wealdstone] looking after Luke [Armstrong] with the hope that we can give him some downtime ahead of Chesterfield on the bank holiday weekend.

“I have no idea if we’re playing Weymouth at the weekend or not which is the fault of the National League. They need to do something about it because they made the decision that the game would be moved to the last day and gave the go ahead but Weymouth haven’t been overly forthcoming, which I understand.

“From our perspective, we need to know. We’ve got to plan a week and we’ve got players travelling home and we need to know what we’re doing with them throughout this coming week and that obviously changes if we have a game at the end of it.

“It’s an important game but we’re non the wiser. We were told there would be a definitive answer last week and now we’re still no further forward so it’s something I’m not overly happy about.

“Someone needs to take responsibility at the National League.”

Earlier in April, Hartlepool manager Dave Challinor told The Mail: “We’ve put our case forward to the National League and it will be their decision that they’ve got to sort out with Weymouth but we haven’t heard anything yet.

“Whether it’s fair or sporting integrity, whatever you want to call it, it’s a difficult scenario that no one wanted to happen.

“In the event the game isn’t rearranged, we’ve just got to make sure that the last game we have against Sutton is an important one with lots riding on it.”

Another positive should the Weymouth match get rearranged is that it will allow fans to return to Victoria Park before the end of the regular season.

From the 17th of May, supporters are set to be allowed back into sport stadiums across the country in limited numbers for the first time since March 2020.

Based on the current fixture schedule, Pools’ final match will take place away at Sutton United on the 22nd of May with limited supporters.

Pools fans are unlikely to be allowed to attend the match at Gander Green Lane under current guidelines.

So should Hartlepool be able to secure a top five place, fans would be permitted to return to Victoria Park for a play-off fixture with a maximum crowd of 3,932.
