Harry Maguire causes uproar with his social media ‘mistake’ over reports of an upset Cristiano Ronaldo who allegedly asks to leave Man Utd.

Social media followers of the Red Devils defender spotted that he ‘liked’ a post by SPORTbible on Instagram which reposted a a newspaper story that one of the reasons CR7 was unhappy at Old Trafford was because he is having to take a 25% pay cut due to the Premier League club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Underneath the post, it has been liked by Maguire’s official account, leading to much anger from Man Utd fans at his decision to publicly react to a behind-the-scenes issue.

This incident is just the latest for new boss Erik ten Hag to deal with after United’s return to pre-season training, something which has been dominated by the absence of Ronaldo, who has refused to return to Carrington as he bids to engineer a summer move away.

 

Citing ‘family reasons’, the Portugal international has not joined back up with his team-mates after the summer break, leaving the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Napoli on red alert.

It was not entirely clear whether Maguire was just as unhappy or having some fun at his teammate’s expense because the remaining 75% means Ronaldo is ‘only’ getting around £360,000-a-week.

However, BBC Sport has been told Maguire liked the story in error and it has now been removed and he is due at Old Trafford tonight to watch England open their Euro 2022 campaign against Austria.

Maguire has returned to training but he may now also face the wrath of Ten Hag if the manager doesn’t take kindly to his social media activity, whether the like was intended or not.

At the end of the week, his side will fly to Bangkok to face Liverpool in their opening match of pre-season, before heading Down Under for games against Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

They then head out to Europe for a showdown with Atletico Madrid in Oslo, although it’s yet to be seen whether Ronaldo would be present for any of the five matches this summer.
