A Grimsby Town fan has been arrested after assaulting a police officer at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park on Saturday afternoon.
During the League Two clash, a 33-year-old supporter from the away end was ejected out of the grounds after a Greater Manchester police officer was allegedly attacked.
The culprit was arrested and the copper didn’t sustain any serious injuries, policing for the match however was heavily condemned by Grimsby fans.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police told Grimsby Live: “At around 3:20pm on Saturday 15 October 2022, officers were present at Edgeley Park Stadium policing the Stockport County v Grimsby Town FC football game.”
They said an officer was assaulted whilst policing the game, but did not sustain any serious injuries.
“The 33-year-old male was ejected from the stadium by officers and security staff. He was then arrested for assaulting a police constable and having possession of a Class A drug.”
The League Two game itself saw Grimsby continue their impressive away record continued with a 3-1 victory against the 10-man Stockport.
The Hatters, who had been unbeaten in five league games at home, dominated the early stages but fell behind to a quick double with Ryan Johnson making an error which was pounced upon, a parried Otis Khan effort fell into the path of Harry Clifton to tap-in on the 24th minute.
The hosts couldn’t get back under control, going two down inside the half-hour mark when Gavan Holohan sent his effort into the back of the net from point-blank range.
Paddy Madden got Dave Challinor’s side back in the game before the interval when he scored for a third successive game on the rebound.
Stockport thought they had a leveller after the restart when Myles Hippolyte’s fierce shot was saved superbly by goalkeeper Max Crocombe.
Any chance of a comeback were crushed when Callum Camps was issued a straight red card for a rash challenge with 18 minutes remaining and then late into stoppage-time, substitute Alex Hunt grabbed a third as Grimsby eased to a sixth successive away game without defeat.
Paul Hurst didn’t hide his delight as his Grimsby team made it back-to-back wins in the league and extended their unbeaten away run to six with a victory.
Hurst said: “I’m delighted as it’s a big win against a very tough team; I’ve said they’re in a false position in the league, and I think they showed they’re a good team as when they went down to ten men, it wasn’t straightforward for us.
“We’ve spoken about trying to manage games with the players as I think there have been times where we’ve been too nice or a bit naïve. I was sick of seeing teams come to us and take time with injuries, argue with the referee and play for throw-ins; we had to do a bit of that today, and I make no apologies for it.
“I was pleased with a lot of what we did; we had a clear idea of how we wanted to approach the game, and for the majority of the first half, it worked almost to perfection. We scored some good goals and looked like a threat.
“We knew they’d try and crowd the middle of the pitch with the wide players coming in, so we made the necessary changes. We had a great chance with Harry in the second half, which would’ve made things easier a bit earlier in the game, but we got that third to send another massive following home happy.”
Dave Challinor said post-match on the two goals in six minutes setting the tone of the game: “They did have to be starting well and you’re comfortable in the game, similar to similar to last week in a different way if you like in terms of how the game was played how the game panned out.
“Probably the important thing is we didn’t get the first goal and you have to look back and and maybe go last week that our performance was it boosted by the fact we scored when we were on top or had the opportunity, Sarcevic’s chance, goes in, he takes it on that’s extra bit and scores potentially looking at a different game he the bits after that in terms of the two goals highlight or are very similar to what’s happened over the course of the season.
“We’ve absolutely killed ourselves and shoot ourselves in the foot, by, I don’t know by decision making, trying things that certainly from all side of things we’re not looking from them in terms of where they’re playing and the type of goal that you can see can be damaging in more than just a nil one on the on the score and especially as I say especially here when we’ve had some moments like that we’ve had draws if you like and we’ve not won games there’s a little bit of challenge.
“The big thing for me is you’ve got to get over that footballs again with mistakes if there weren’t mistakes especially this level you wouldn’t be playing at this level right across the board so you’ve got to expect that but you have to you have to move on and and back yourself.”

This is what fans said with a Grimsby fan was arrested after assaulting a police officer at Stockport…
@emmagoldie_: Please do something on Mercian way after home games @StockportCounty @GMPStockport Constantly leaving games petrified of getting hurt between the fights between home & away fans and police. Very nearly got a bottle thrown at me which lead to a panic attack. It’s not okay
@buttysbets: Sorry this happened to you. This is exactly the reason why I left before the final whistle. You could feel the tension inside the stadium building up. I take my two young lads with me. Grimsby fans attacking each other and police officers 10-20 mins into the game. Madness.
@AshPalmersBrick: Totally agree. Something needs to be done, thankfully we were ahead of the incidents but looked back and saw numerous objects thrown. The police ahead of us took an age to react too
@countythomo: I thought the county fans did well. Could easily have got nasty as many of their fans were offering behaviour that would have deserved a good ironing out. At one point there were six coopers with batons drawn. 6. Laughable.
@neilb09: Another lot of police stood by the ground. Turned up after a while then started trying to move home fans on rather than just getting away fans on the buses that were there. Reckon the operation plan is written by a 5 year old….
@emsyjean: County should have held back away fans for 10/15 mins and this would have calmed everything down. Hope you are ok x
@lukeash10: Trashing the advertising boards and fighting with the Police after only ten minutes 🤯. Strange bunch those Grimsby fans but the loudest we’ve had at EP.
@GolazoDan: Grimsby fans getting chucked out by police and nearly starting a full on brawl with them, while everyone stops playing to watch. 10 minutes gone. I love this game.
@andy_gtfc: In the side stand so admittedly can’t see it all, but four police started marching one lad out from near us (haven’t seen what he’s allegedly done) next thing loads of police running in and handbags start. Overkill to try and throw one person out and it’s flared up from there.
@jimmyb1985: 100% copper threw punches see it very clearly
@Olibat96: Police were awful, 4/5 on 1 just punching fans so other fans trying to get involved to get them off our fans.. shocking
@chrisl1702: One bloke been escorted out by 2 police then 1 fans stops them moving then another then another and before you no it a bundle of police and fans at each other. Not defending either side but no one knows what he was getting escorted for so for me just stay out of it
@Kellarooo: Right in front of us – so many people getting involved who had nothing to do with it. Police were v heavy handed however. Also – May I add there is one stupid steward in particular who is taking it way too far with the fans, trying to wind up the crowd even more than already are. Steward appears to have been removed now but not great at all from #scfc staff
@mcgparker: Money on half a dozen town fans acting like muppets again
@JoeWard180702: Saw some poor girl wearing a Grimsby shirt get pelted in the face by a bottle thrown by the Grimsby fans
@mikebridge88: Hopefully the EFL can deal with Grimsby Town. I’m sure there’s a ruling that violence at game will result in the club being fined for such incidents.
@CountyHatter83: Absolute wankers the lot of them
@SK13County: I wanna know which mindless copper is still allowing away coaches to park on Mercian Way 👏
@HatterSteely: Was stood at the bottom of the main stand watching them come out, was like watching walking dead mate, absolute tramps to a man #lonsdale #sportsdirect
@MAC51MCR: Feckin relic wannabes of the 70s/80s, no room for it then and no room for it now. It’s actuality embarrassing. The amount of footage gathered these days only makes them look even more stupid and susceptible to being banned.
@acrobatonline: Me and my Lad were amongst 5 mins earlier. They sang we’re the Grimsby..we always win away. Seemed obvious to retort back the County version. Mariners seemed rattled but probably best it didn’t go further as were outnumbered. Could tell it was Grimsby’s fans as had extra fingers.
@Timothy57040329: Looks like they are having a good time chanting all the same fans from this clip why the heck have those wpcs etc got batons drawn ready ? I don’t see any other footy team fans etc over reaction ?
