Greenock Morton condemns unacceptable fan behaviour as video emerges of incident mid-game

Greenock Morton condemns unacceptable fan behaviour as a video emerges of one incident that took place mid-game on Tuesday night.

Morton said they will take action against those who disrupted their Viaplay Cup fixture at home to Brechin with the hosts winning 1-0.

There had been some pitch invaders, while and a drinks container was thrown at a steward, as seen in the clip below.

Morton general manager Dale Pryde-MacDonald was alerted over the clip, and has spoken out on the incidents and said some of them are ‘illegal offences’.

STATEMENT:

Following last night’s Premier Sports Cup group stage match with Brechin City, I wish to provide the following statement.

The incidents that took place last night were wholly unacceptable and not reflective of Greenock Morton Football Club or the majority of our supporters.

The small minority does not and will not reflect the larger proportion of our terrific fanbase and it is clear to see from the messages we have received since the match that the appetite is with our fanbase to ensure Cappielow continues to be an inclusive, welcoming and positive environment for all and to rid poor and unacceptable conduct.

Led by myself and our safety team here at the club, we have reviewed the footage from last night’s match on our CCTV system along with witness reports, as well as liaising with our stewarding company, which will now lead to action against those who committed the offenses.

It is important to reinforce that some of the events that took place last night are illegal offenses and will come with punishments beyond club level.

In closing, I want to re-emphasise my support to the vast majority of our fanbase who behave exceptionally well in stadiums across the country, as well as our own, and make supporting Greenock Morton a positive, engaging and inclusive place for all.

Dale Pryde-MacDonald, General Manager

Twitter users reacted as Greenock Morton condemns unacceptable fan behaviour as a video emerges of an incident mid-game…

@KZYmedia: That’s just uncalled for, no wonder clubs are bringing in minimum ages to enter grounds unaccompanied…

@Chris85Scott: Still no statement about the Brechin keeper grabbing an 11 year old ball boy? That’s what started all the wains going mental not that I’m condoning it but at least the club should give a statement about why the young team started it.

@alanfay53: Canny believe all the folks on here that think what that kid done was ok ,club 100% to call it out

@DelboyDanger: That’s not very nice

@WildRover1882: Alcohol at football should be banned to stop this sort of thing….

@EvonneJohnston: Disgusting!!! Despicable behaviour!!! 🤬 Hope the steward is okay.

@Stuwilson68Sw: I am a Steward and it’s so frustrating to do what I do for free ,and get abuse . I have done as much as possible to reason with the youth wit a degree of success. Usually it’s just one or two who set others off .

@RickHendry_: I don’t know what the young person’s motives were or why he did that but listening to the cheers is sickening, that’s no way to treat any human being, I hope he was at least ejected from the ground

@gordon_struth: What Vale of Clyde did is give free season tickets to their ultras – who are fantastic btw – in return for a parent’s phone number, which they checked. So anyone misbehaving is getting their mum or dad called.

@liamthomson_97: Guys just trying to do his job man. He should have been evacuated out the ground!

@transferscot: Time for Morton to take action. It’s the only way they will learn.

@Jock_Rangers: An example is needed here. We are better than that.

@gmfanspage: Get them banned. @DalePrydeMacD

@MichaelMcCahi10: Everyone in this clip finding it funny should be banned from Scottish football.

@atewari3: Kid or not, that is pure shitebag behaviour. Guys just doing his job. Seems to be a lot of leniency for kids causing unwanted scenes at grounds but when it comes to adults they’re shown the door… controversial I know, but teach them a lesson and they’ll know not to do it again.

@Eilish_Barry: Bad enough we trying to encourage younger people to games for the locals yet the smaller group of kids who rather be causing grief than being responsible and respectful just as well it was only juice morton need to nip these sort in the bud.

@foreverayellow: simply not on that, i know they’re kids and all make mistakes etc but that guy (steward) is just trying to do his job and yet gets a drink thrown at him, where has the respect gone these days?!
