Graeme Souness has gone viral this week as he says “Wenger was not a football man, he was very lucky!” Yes you read that right.
The 71 year old pundit was once regarded as one of the more insightful in his field; however, he has reached a stage in his career where his commentary increasingly reflects a sense of bitterness it seems.
While he is certainly entitled to express his views and controversial takes, it is important to note that he appeared visibly frustrated on several issues, as seen in the most recent episode of Three Up Front.
His views on Arsene Wenger had Simon Jordan and Troy Deeney genuinely perplexed when they heard the assertion that the Arsenal legend was not a ‘football man’ and merely ‘lucky’ to have inherited a strong defensive lineup and a player like Bergkamp, along with possessing knowledge of the French market during a time when the nation was producing a remarkable generation of talent.
This is absolutely shambolic from Souness.
Wenger won 3 Premier League titles, 7 FA Cups, went a full season unbeaten and is widely regarded as a revolutionary in the English game.
I know Graeme’s keen to have big opinions but do me a favour.

Jordan: You got a thought on [Arsene] Wenger? You like him?
Souness: Do you think he’s a football man? No, not particularly. I’ve been on the bench and listened to what he’s telling his players to do. I’ve been working for Sky in games where he’s made very strange decisions.
Jordan: A double double winner and an invincible manager. Not a football man?
Souness: My take on him was he got very, very lucky at a time when french football produced his greatest ever group of players.
Jordan: You having this?
Deeney: I’m trying to hear argument before I…
Souness: Greatest ever group of players. Inherited is the best back five of world football and a 22 year old [Dennis] Bergkamp. I think Wrighty, there was still life in him.
Deeney: There’s a lot of luck you’re talking about there, though, isn’t it, to say he’s not a football man.
Souness: And then they had ten years where he won a couple FA Cups because that cycle had been and gone.
Jordan: Are you being mean spirited because you’re just culturally different?
Souness: No, I’ve never spoke to him about football. He would never come into my office after a game. The only manager that never did.
Jordan: Maybe he didn’t like you.
Souness: I’d go to his office after a game.
Jordan: Maybe he knows you buy cheap wine.
Souness: I’d go to his office after a game. He would never be there to talk football. I don’t know if he’s a football man or not. Never spoke football with him.
You can watch the full episode below…
In the above video, they talk on a variety of topics. Should Manchester United copy Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City to get back to the top? Why are Tottenham so flimsy? Would you take Paul Pogba at your club now and was Arsene Wenger a lucky manager?
“With United’s executives meeting this week and possibly deciding on Erik Ten Hag’s future, Simon gives his insight on what might be going through their minds while Graeme wonders if there’s enough football knowledge at the club.
“Tottenham’s latest capitulation leads them to ask why that has been the case for so long and Troy reveals whether players think they are a soft touch. Also, would James Maddison get into any of the top three and does Ange Postecoglu need to liven up a bit in his post match interviews?
“Graeme gets an opportunity to discuss one of his favourite subjects – Paul Pogba – as the they debate whether they would sign him after his doping ban was reduced. Also in Graeme’s line of fire is, of all people, Arsene Wenger: was he a great manager or just very lucky?
“And with top players complaining about the increasing number of matches they’re being asked to play, Troy explains why he would vote not to strike.”
There was huge reaction online as Graeme Souness say “Wenger was not a football man, he was very lucky!”…
@alexbishop86: If Jordan & Deeney think you’re spouting nonsense then you’re in trouble!
@gtalksarsenal: Man needs to grow up, 70 plus behaving like a cry baby cos Wenger kept it moving 🤣😂😭
@Markafc87: Jesus Christ what a load of shit no wonder sky can’t stand that melt
@ToonMouthTyne: What a bizarre 60 second watch. Souness talking for a full minute about how Arsene Wenger wasn’t a “Football Man” and was one of the luckiest Managers of all-time. One of the GREATEST Managers in Football history berated by one of the WORST.
@UNDERCOVER_JM: Absolute poppycock from Sourness. 🙄
@Joshofdjungle: As a Liverpool fan, I apologized to all Arsenal fan. Wenger is a legend. He changed the Premier League on and off the field. He’s a great football man.
@RednWhite_Army: Like the pod and listen regularly, but if you allow drivel like this to continue from Souness I’m switching off for good. Arsene Wenger isn’t a football man? Legendary manager and now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development? Righto 👍🏻
@HalfWit21t: Such a hateful prick, everyone in football agrees he changed the English game incl Ferguson. Souness is a dinosaur and largely irrelevant.
@TheEllisScott: Simon was spot on, Wenger probably didn’t like the miserable sod
@TFMick1892: Souness had a more than decent inheritance at Liverpool and screwed it up. He had a v good inheritance at #NUFC and turned us to shit. Wenger or Souness to manage your football club? Hmm, not a hard decision really.
@goonerray67: Maybe Wenger only wanted to socialise with managers on his level, not no marks like Souness?
@clarkey49: One works for talksport the other works for fifa.

“Wenger was not a football man, he was very lucky!”
Wenger sacrificed his life for football, and suffered for it. Only to be spoken about like this by miserable and ignorant c*nts like Souness. I hate how shows exists because of extreme opinions and hatepic.twitter.com/EQr71HhXBU https://t.co/qD8U1J4xP7
