‘God help them’ – Much disliked former club owner in advanced talks with Huddersfield

Much disliked former club owner Marcus Evans in reportedly advanced talks with taking over at Championship outfit Huddersfield Town.

He was first linked with purchasing a stakeholding in the side in December with the Terriers currently majority-owned by chairman Phil Hodgkinson.

However Hodgkinson has been absent from the club since his unrelated businesses went into admin in November and his position as chairman looks to be untenable.

Former chairman Dean Hoyle still owns 25% of the club and has returned to its day-to-day running over the past two months say Examiner Live.

Hoyle was named as interim chief executive after Mark Devlin left the Championship outfit last week, and now this interesting development has come onto scene.

Football Insider report that Evans wants to keep him in that role should his plans to invest in the club go through.

It goes on to say that ‘Evans is ready to gain control of Huddersfield and negotiations are progressing well’.

Evans launched a hospitality company in 1983 and the 2021 Sunday Times Rich List estimates his wealth to be £786m.

He took control of Ipswich Town in 2007 and sold up to US investment group Gamechanger in 2021 after heavy backlash from supporters.

Evans took a 5% share in Gamechanger as part of the deal to have a small stake in the Tractorboys.

Throughout his time in charge, Evans invested heavily in Ipswich and wrote off around £100m in debts owed to him by the club when he sold up last year.

Despite his best efforts, he left after watching Ipswich slip into League One regardless of his financial input and their bid to get out of the third tier, despite being favourites to win promotion last summer, sees them struggling in 11th and needing some wins to make up ground if they want a late push from the playoffs.

Twitter users reacted as the much disliked former club owner is said to be in advanced talks with Huddersfield Town…

@BlaineAdams96: Sorry Huddersfield fans, I really am…

@itfczac: apologies in advance huddersfield fans

@DanthemanCook: Sorry Huddersfield you’re in big trouble

@johnalbertregan: Heaven help you Huddersfield fans 💙 Good Luck with that one

@CraigyCraigo23: Wow, god help Huddersfield.

@kempyblue: 10 years of disaster ownership with us good luck #htafc you’ll need it

@CanaryPaul2: Wow….first it’s BK8 as sponsors and now Marcus Evans! Wish you luck….you’ll need it!

@NicolaWallITFC: Oh dear 🙈🙊 Unless he’s learnt his lesson after his disastrous 13/14 years at #itfc, I really feel sorry for his next ‘venture’!! Nieve and not really understanding that a club is much more than what’s happening on the pitch!! Good luck 😬 #htafc

@jackhtafc_: yeah how about no?

@terryhtfc89: Uninspiring compared to some of the rumours, but we were never going to be in the eyes of anyone big. Give him a chance, he will be well aware of his mistakes at Ipswich and he’s not skint. He won’t last long here if it doesn’t work.

@arran_n: we are FUCKED

@mjaustin_: Poor bastards – hope they enjoy… well… whatever it is we endured for 10 years #htafc

@Hockz1: Would never let this bloke near my club ever again.. good luck Huddersfield fans 👍🏻

@flatt_ciera: Jeeeeeeez poor club

@Smiffy_2010: God help them

@lilytxylor: he can fuck off

@TZjman: Seems odd

@FilmsCharlie: Well… he’s very rich. And Hoyle will be pleased about that as it’ll mean he can dine out on liver and onions whenever he likes.

@DavidMaidstone: Let’s hope we don’t want to follow the Huddersfield model anymore. #ncfc

@jaisinghhhh: Please don’t do this to us. Please???

@JoshwatersHTFC: I’d rather not lads #htafc

@Owain1992uk: For any Terriers fans, If this is actually true steer bloody well clear.

@Vind781: I hope this is wrong or you’ll be leaving the Championship by the back door.

@ITFC_SteveG: I hope for the sake of #htafc that he learned a hell of a lot from his mistakes at #itfc otherwise they will be suffering the same slow and painful decline as us. I’m shocked that he wants to do it all again.

@BenNotley: Unlucky @htafc… This could ruin you… You’ll keep afloat to start with, but quickly start sinking… #ITFC

@HTAFC_STATTO: Interesting. According to this report is sounds like Dean would stay on running the club and Evans would be majority owner. With the estimated combined net worth of the owners being over 1 Billion.
