Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp takes issue at how Tottenham’s being managed as a club

Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp make some important points and takes issues at how Tottenham’s being managed as a club.

Jamie Redknapp said that Spurs are prioritising the club’s business model over football matters on the pitch while Gary Neville spoke of Tottenham’s manager turnover over the last 15 years.

Spurs fans before the game protested against Daniel Levy, a march taking place. One brave fan took it upon himself to hold up a Levy In banner towards the huge group of people who had a Levy Out banner, as can be seen below…

Gary Neville said ahead of the Tottenham v Man Utd game: “The actual way he sacked them. Some of those managers are in the top four. Your dad was in the top four. Others were in fifth position, sixth position, seventh position, doing relatively well for Spurs.

“And not just the fact that, actually, they’re in decent positions, but some great managers on that list that have not been able to work at this club.

“So it may be he’s got to a point where he realises that I mean, the three managers that I think have currently be just been here, Mourinho, Conte, and and Nuno are first, second, and third in their respective leagues currently. That is a poor reflection.

“I said about Manchester United being a graveyard for players over the last ten years. This has been a graveyard for great managers who’ve not been able to get the success that they’ve wanted.

“So from that point of view, maybe he’s looking back at his history of how he’s operated.

“Maybe he’s looking at the managers that have left that are doing currently well, and maybe he’s reflected upon that and thinking, actually, it’s something that I’ve got to change here that culturally,

“I don’t create the best environment for a manager.”

Kelly said: “Those managers compare in terms of when Spurs have decided to to sack them and the way they look at what Ange Postecoglou is doing at the at the moment.”

Jamie responded: “Well, there’s never really been any rhyme or reason when he’s got rid of managers. That’s what I would say.

“You know, you look at even Villas-Boas was seventh in the league. I think it’s hard to to second guess what someone like Daniel Levy will do.

“He will look at things and try to assess. I felt normally when he comes under huge pressure, that’s when he normally tends to wanna check to to change the manager.

“But I was probably thinking right now, who else do I bring out? You know, who do I bring in? There are candidates out there that I think would do a great job here, but I think that’s the problem.

“I’ve thought long and hard about this situation since they lost against Liverpool and try because I played for both clubs.

“I tried to almost figure out why is it that, you know, Tottenham have been underachieving for so long. And I think a lot of it does come from culture.

“Gary just mentioned it, a winning culture. Whereas when I was at Liverpool, like, I didn’t win as much as I’d like there, but I every season, the culture and the environment was to try and win.

“You know, you bought players to try and win. You were always around the ground, there was pictures of people that have won, you know, great trophies, people like Graeme Souness, tremendous leaders of the football club.

“But here, I just think that as long as they’ve got the American football and they’ve got Beyonce in the summer, I think they’re happy. I think the owners are happy. They’re with their, it looks like a business model that everyone could be happy with, that is successful.

“But does that breed a winning environment? No. It doesn’t because something is fundamentally wrong.

Kelly: Wouldn’t it necessarily negate the other. Can you not have both?

Jamie: They tried to do both, but it hasn’t worked. It hasn’t worked the way that he’s wanted to do.

Jermain: So is it on him or the manager?

Jamie: “I think it’s a bit of both.”

Gary: “When when your dad arrived at Spurs, and I’m asking because to be fair, I’m wondering what actually happens when managers come here, what does Daniel Levy say the expectation is? Does he say that we’re trying to win a Premier League, or does he say I wanna get into the top? But what does he actually he must set that out when he first comes.”

Jamie: “Well, he I think they had they had two points from 8 games when he first come. So one day Juande Ramos was in under incredible pressure. I think he called he called my dad up on the Thursday, and then by the Saturday, he was already in charge. They played Bolton here, and that’s that was the kind of feeling that he had. I think there was planning protests that weekend, and he thought, right, rather than have any more stick, I’ll get him in.

“Don’t get me wrong. They had incredible success. He brought a lot of good players in. We done Modric, Bale. Jermain was up front. It was a it was an exciting exciting side, a little bit like Pochettino’s.

“So they went really close, but I think that there’s a difference there. And, like, he said, I wanna make sure that…”

Gary: “Does he say when you played I want a title and your team and what a champions…”

Jermain: “Probably the objective was obviously to finish in the top four, you know, champions…”

Gary: “Is that said or is that unsaid sort of? How does it work here? Because at United, really simple, like at Liverpool, we have to win the league. That that even now, I suspect Amorim is being told by the owners massively hundreds of points, it feels like, away from it. Our target is to get the Premier League title back. I’m sure he’s been told that. Yeah. But what are we told here?”

Jermain: “I suppose only the obviously, the manager has managed could could answer that question.

“I remember, obviously, being at Rangers and and Steve actually said that we won the league the next season. Was that right? I’ve been told that we have to win the league. I’m gonna come. You know, you have to. So he put down the players. Now you just have to sort of, like, drive those sort of standards and and and try and do it again.

“But I just think the chairman is is is obviously tried to create, you know, best in class. And when I say that, I mean, like, best in class in terms of the training ground, the stadium, you know, the academy, the coaches in the academy, you know, try and bring these young players, and we’ve seen young players come through. That’s probably the positive this season.

“But, I mean, in terms of the managers, you know, of course, there’s times in the transfer window where you perhaps the the chairman could have done better.

“But still, when I look at some of the performances this season, especially when you’ve got these key injuries and these young players not getting protected, I just felt like at times that not just the manager, but the coaches should have adapted certain games.”

Twitter users reacted as Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp takes issue at how Tottenham’s being managed as a club…

@TalkingTHFC: Starts the debate really well and then completely loses it at the end. “They’ve tried to do both.” Have they bugger.

@kaiserpth: When have Spurs win anything apart from a Cup? They’ve not won the league since the early 60s and were in the old Div 2 in the 70s. Even with Gaza, waddle and Hoddle they were nowhere near winning the League. Let’s be realistic and maybe then enjoy spurs playing good football

@BrianSpurs25: Don’t often agree with him but he’s spot on here

@griffospurs: He’s not wrong

@SandysBitxh_: They always have. They only care about profit #LevyOut #EnicOut

@WorldofHotspur:
Disappointed in Defoe for steering convo away from Levy.
No it’s not “a bit of both.”
Levy sets the culture, dictates which players are signed and which managers are hired.
All roads lead back to him.
24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy.
This isn’t a debate 😭

@AverageTHFCfan: Jamie spitting straight facts today!

@stephen_rista: Can’t believe I am saying this but he is right and glad he is saying this as this is on Levy not backing Managers! The players we have not been good enough for those managers ! Poch not getting a single player for 18 months after getting to a champs final says it all #LevyOut

@mattpage2000:
Nailed it 👇 football is secondary.
#LEVYOUT #ENICOUT

@7ord4n_: Well he ain’t wrong is he? #LevyOut #ENICOUT
