Gareth Southgate makes England squad announcement for Brazil and Belgium games

Gareth Southgate makes the latest England squad announcement for upcoming pre-Euro 2024 friendly games against Brazil and Belgium.

The exciting double-header against two nations ranked alongside the Three Lions in the top five of FIFA ‘s world rankings will form an important part of preparation for UEFA EURO 2024.

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil will visit on Saturday 23 March (kick off 7pm), with the Red Devils of Belgium scheduled for Tuesday 26 March (7.45pm GMT).

Gareth Southgate said: “I’m happy to have two strong matches in March as we build towards the EURO finals. It is important we take every opportunity to test ourselves against top opposition.

“Before then, we have our last qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia coming up. Getting two positive results is essential if we are to make sure of being top seeds in the EURO draw next month. We can’t afford to think the job is done as there is still work to do, while every second for us together in camp counts if we are to give ourselves the best chance of success next summer.”

The squad size will be reduced to 23 players for the tournament in Germany, a decrease from the 26 players allowed at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The team has established a strong core group of players due to their success in recent major competitions, making it challenging for new players to secure a spot in the final squad.

Fans have given their reaction as Gareth Southgate makes the latest England squad announcement for games against Brazil and Belgium…

@CJHCFC1994: Cole Palmer making the England squad, rightfully so. Not really any player more deserving than he this season for England. 👍 Malo Gusto not being called up to the senior France squad though, absolute joke! More than deserving of making that side. 🤦‍♂️

@Franciekid: Eliott and jones not being nailed on for the England squad is insane, there was more talk of guys like mainoo who’s done absolutely nothing compared to the Liverpool boys… I don’t get it at all, they also both killed it in the u21 euros which they won with ease

@ConnorMOT92: Tbf it’s right decision that KP’s been dropped from the England squad considering he hasn’t played for most of the season & also been poor for West Ham since joining them on loan.

@Cal1NUFC: Totally deserved for Anthony Gordon. Quality last time playing for the U21’s in the Euros under Lee Carsley and now has been called up for the main team. Brilliant this season despite our form, definitely brings versatility to this England side! #NUFC #ENG 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@10woz_: Henderson over Barkley is a disgrace

@__Jordan72:  Sam Johnstone over Butland 😂😂😂

@whuharley18: bowen and paqueta swapping shirts after the brazil game oh my word i need that

@KieranBarker96: All this has proved is Southgate picked Phillips because he played for Man City… not based on form…

@Ben_S1990: No issues with this squad. But when you look at that defence it’s baffling why so many believe we should and have to win the euros. And it’s exactly why Henderson is still going to be going, GS doesn’t trust the defence enough and he’s probably right

@AnfieIdFix: An injured Anthony Gordon getting a call up over Harvey Elliott is nasty stuff. An uninjured Jordan Henderson getting a call up over Elliott is even nastier

@_KKWWFC: Henderson could literally be in a box on his ma’s mantelpiece, and still get a call up from Southgate ffs

@WillB_2003: Picking Jordan Henderson in 2024 is a sackable offence.

@poeticjustice92: And again, Henderson is in. Yet Mainoo, who has proven to be nearly undroppable for Man Utd doesn’t get the chance to experience a training camp. Get Gareth out and stop wasting our time with dreary football when we’ve actually got talent who can play.

@mitchytucker7: Hendo 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Southgate gotta be arrested for war crimes to this country at this point

@ImJamieMartin: Ramsdale over Butland? Unless it’s for fitness reasons, I don’t get it. Ramsdale has barely played. Like him a lot, but Butland in form. Guessing Henderson is in because he’s trusted? Again, not sure about that selection choice.

@SSE_LTFC: Jordan Henderson must have naked photos of Southgate to be honest
