Southgate on Rashford, via Sky Sports: “These are of course difficult calls. You are talking about very good players who have been important over a number of years. With Marcus, other players in his position have had better seasons. It’s as simple as that.”as been. You want him in those central areas. It’s about finding the best way to make that happen.”
Southgate on Hendo: “The 33 isn’t quite a fair definitoin because we are taking a bigger squad with young players to look at as well.
“Hendo has missed five weeks and hasn’t been able to get to the intensity since then. He’s a fantastic professional, it was a difficult call to make as he’s been so supportive in my time.
“Ben [Chilwell], Marcus, Jordan were all incredibly professional and they dealt with it well.
Southgate on if the young players make the 26: “Everybody has a chance. There are players we want to see.
“We were in a similar situation befoe the last Euros. More time will help us make better decisions to get a balanced squad. There are some injury issues that are apparent, some we don’t have all the information on.
“We need to see how the players will react to training. This has been as complicated a group as I can remember, and we’ve had quite a few.
“We can make better decisions by giving us more time.”
Southgate on Shaw: “Shaw is up against it. He’s missed a lot of football. Beacuse he’s first choice, we’re giving him longer. I’m not sure what is realistic at this moment in time.
“I’ve talked with him, the medical team are liaising with Man Utd closely. But I would have to say Shaw is a long shot.”
Southgate on how many players will he cut: “We don’t know where we will need to cut, this is part of the issue. If we did it tomorrow, we may take a dozen defenders as we have so many questions.
“The next couple of weeks, it will be much clearer. That’s why there are opportunities for everybody.
“You can take too may forwards as well, too many options in the forward areas. You have to make them feel loved and special so if you take too many, it will be complicated.”
Southgate on Henderson’s leadership qualities: “Henderson will be a miss. He’s an exceptional individual, a fantastic human being. He’s been in that leadership role since I took charge.
“We have had a lot of our senior players missing, we made Declan Rice captain and he rose to that challenge. That’s what we want other people to do.
“We have young players with a lot of caps, there’s no reason why young players can’t lead. You are giving other players space to develop.”
Southgate on on why was Dier not picked: “He’s played very well for Bayern. I know they are very happy with him. We think he is behind the other guys. We have watched him every game, including the big ones in the Champions League and we’re conscious of that.”
Southgate on where will Foden play: “Phil has played off the right or the left. The key for Phil is where he ends up, not his starting position.
“When he starts on the left with City, he sometimes stays wide but is sometimes allowed to drift. Then it’s about how you defend. Jude has played as a ten but sometimes defends on the left wing for Real Madrid.
“We never pin our players to a touchline, that’s not how we work. There is that freedom. It’s obvious how brilliant Phil has been. You want him in those central areas. It’s about finding the best way to make that happen.”
Southgate on England injuries: “There is a significant number of injuries. We have an important physical challenge where people need more work. Some players need minutes in games, other players don’t need refreshing.
“We have navigated that well in our previous end of season tournaments.
“We’ve never had so many unknown situations. We’ve had tournaments where we have taken a player who is pretty certain to be back for certain moments of the tournament. We’ve had tournaments where players have been in the Champions League finals.”
Southgate on on if he will keep it at 33 until June 7th: “I couldn’t answer that accurately at the moment. Certain pictures will emerge and evolve. I like to give players as much clarity as possible, that’s helpful.”
Southgate on if he spoke to Ben White: “No. From what I am aware, he was not available to us.”
Southgate on who had the best reaction to England call-up: “I haven’t had time to phone any of the ones we are bringing in. My priority is to focus on those who didn’t make the squad.
“The nice calls are lovely to make but at that moment, they are not the priority and I can speak to them later this week.”
Southgate on if this his best England squad: “I can answer that until we finalise the England squad. There are more options in the attacking areas. I think that’s hard to compare and contrast.
“We’ve had good squads for all the tournaments. But different balance, different needs and solutions. We’ve had to find different ways of playing.
“We have a set style of play now. We are not going to move far away from what we’ve been. But our midfield looks different and the team will evolve because of that.”
Southgate on if this is the squad that. can win the Euros: “Of course, everyone is waiting for that headline. I’d be an idiot if I said no, but if I said yes, that doesn’t mean there’ not a lot of work ahead of us.
“They know what is possible, they know what they’ve won at club level and what that’s taken. You can see cup football, you have to navigate game by game. But in knockout football, the Champions League showed that Man City and Arsenal were in the best three teams and didn’t get to the latter stages, as it’s one moment and fine margins. You have to deliver on those moments.
“Are we one of those teams who can win? Of course.”
This is what fans are saying as Gareth Southgate announces England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad with a 33-man shortlist…
@mattlyynch: What is this and what have you done with Gareth Southgate?
@MolyneuxLuke: Might be his best selection yet
@SSE_LTFC: Ivan Toney getting in over Solanke raises big question marks.
@Benhadlington1: If you massively complain against this squad then there is never any pleasing you. Great squad and other than maybe one or two it’s a perfect squad. Solanke will feel gutted about missing out after a great season
@doyoueveneven: No Chilwell, no Henderson, no Rashford. What a time to be alive. He actually did it.
@maxpalace03: Only a provisonal but it’s best squad he’s put out since he’s been England manager. Fair play to him for leaving out the people that have actually been bad and not picking favourites. Let’s hope he picks the right players for the actual squad. No Tomori and Mitchell is mad tho
@xLepebble: Finally a good squad. Only thing I’d change is Solanke over Toney
@NicktheHornet: Don’t know what’s happened to Gareth Southgate but fair play for actually selecting a squad based on form!
@FloydTweet: Feels like a very un-Southgate squad. A lot of the veterans not getting a look in, justified yet still surprising from manager who has previously prioritised experience. Forward thinking and exciting. Mitchell the only big omission for me.
@DW94_: Toney over Solanke is crazy. Curtis Jones over Harvey Elliot is crazy. But that’s just me
@JupiterWhistles: I would absolutely love Southgate to try and explain his reasoning in leaving out Solanke and taking Toney. Just utterly baffling. Even more baffling that most journalists do not seem that bothered by the omission. #afcb #solanke #toney
@DavidHindmarsh7: If Shaw isn’t fit for the tournament, the best shout to play at LB is probably Gomez with how poor Trippier has been for a while. Other than Chilwell, the lack of other natural options to challenge Shaw is a massive problem.
@geordiejosh: Wow. We are actually winning it all.
@UltraTV90: Absolutely spot on! I’m with GARETH on this one for the first time ever!
@Mark_CPFC: Mitchell should be there as hes one of Englands best left backs
@HonestMillwall: What a squad. Southgate has finally shown some balls.
@davez2010: Buzzing for @anthonygordon & @trippier2 Hard work pays off 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 #NUFC ⚫️⚪️
@ED__67: 19 goal dom solanke not picked over Toney who hasn’t scored in over 1,000 minutes. Shocking
@WhatTheForkLads: Ollie and Konsa 😍 Nice to see Eze in there, not sure Toney should be there.
@Hughesy_B: Well done our boys. Thoroughly deserved! #cpfc #England ❤️💙🦁🦁🦁
@Fonzyy97: Have to win it this year 🏴
@AlexDay041: Solanke scores 19 this season, Toney plays half the year because he’s banned for illegal gambling and still gets to represent his country over Dom very interesting #afcb
