Frank Lampard responds to jibes from Leeds fans after Coventry fall to defeat

Frank Lampard responds to the jibes he received from Leeds fans after his Coventry side fall to a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday night.

Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle both got on the scoresheet to help Leeds stretch their lead at the top of the Championship to five points.

Frank Lampard’s hosts had won their previous four games – and another win would have lifted the 11th-placed Sky Blues level on points with West Brom in the last of the play-off places.

However, they were outplayed by Leeds, who now see their unbeaten run in all competitions extend to 14 games.

Lampard made his own hand gestures towards the taunting away end after the final whistle. The Sky Blues head coach appeared to cup his ear and make a scoreline gesture in response to chants from United supporters throughout the clash.

Lampard refused to comment on the gestures made at the full-time whistle, saying: “I don’t want to talk about that.”

Ex-Premier League official Keith Hackett said to MOT Leeds News: “The statement that was issued on the actions of players over celebrating was made by the Premier League spokesperson, not a member of the EFL. The EFL may have a different approach.

“However, the actions by Frank Lampard are not advisable and he may well receive a letter from the authorities giving him some operational advice. The police and clubs work hard behind the scenes to control and manage spectators. It’s so important for crowd safety.”

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR:

“We’re not used to losing at the minute, so we have to respond and make sure it doesn’t have an effect on all our positive momentum.

“Does it change our attitude to what we need to do over the next 15 games? No. There’s some things we didn’t do brilliantly but we have to accept that nights like this can come. And you just have to learn from them.

“We’ve played the best team in this league and they’ve beaten us. When you play a team like Leeds, you just feel you’re up against players used to a higher level.

“We had Matty Grimes come on and show his quality over the final half hour. And we still have Ephron Mason-Clark and Haji Wright almost ready to return.

Lampard per Sky Sports:

“They deserved to win the game and sometimes you have to accept that, they are top of the league for a reason.

“We shouldn’t be too negative about it because we’ve been on a good run but today showed a bit of a different level.

“We knew we came into a tough game today, you want to win but Leeds are in a good moment and there will be things we can do better for sure. One game we have to take on the chin.

“They’re a fantastic team, lots of talent, lots of speed, Premier League experience and I’m really impressed with them. Sometimes you have to praise a team that come here and play well.”

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke told BBC Radio Leeds:

“A great njght for us and a pretty important win. We knew Coventry were in red-hot form but this was a top-class performance.

“To win at such a difficult place and in such a deserved manner was impressive.

“We created so many chances against such a good side and we were too wasteful. Another night they could have been costly.

“We know we have a really good chance to finish in a great position this season, but we also know we have to keep going with more performances like this.”

Daniel Farke per Sky Sports:

“Happy with many details. Also with the three points, also with a fifth clean sheet in a row but also we have to speak about how we were wasteful in using the chances.

“We have to be much more efficient, when you play such a strong home side you can’t waste too many chances. I want to be respectful, the 2-0 win is great.

“I’m a bit critical of our cutting-edge because we missed too many one-on-ones. Against a good side it can be costly.

“This was a top-class performance from my boys so compliments for that. We were far away from a perfect performance. I can’t be too moody but far from perfect.”
