Former Premier League player arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking

It’s been reported that former Southampton and Portsmouth midfielder, Jhon Viafara, has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The 40 year old ex-Colombian midfielder, was arrested with four other people after being involved in a car accident, while intoxicated.

Viafara, who made over 90 appearances for the two south coast clubs between 2005 and 2008, is also suspected of being a member of a local drug cartel are believed to be heavily linked with the Clan del Golfo, who are known to be one of the most dangerous and powerful criminal organisations in Colombia.

He allegedly smuggled four tonnes of cocaine into the United States. Between 2017 and 2018, it’s said by police that they also seized 2.5 tons of the drug worth $28 million from Viafara’s group.

At the request of US officials, he has been arrested and then transferred to Colombia’s capital to face further questioning.

Media in his native home claim he is part of a gang who smuggle narcotics into America by speed boats and semi-submersibles.

If he is found guilty, the former-Premier League footballer could face extradition to the US.
