Former Premier League and EFL referee reveals ‘dark joke’ in video that got him sacked

After finding out that former Premier League and EFL referee Bobby Madley was sacked for filming a video mocking a disabled person, fans took to express their sympathy towards him…

@KSeckington: Whilst I have sympathy with you….I am going to use this as a tool to show my children how their electronic footprint can affect their lives. It’s also a lesson in trust….Sad story. All the best.

@shellbennett: Big respect for writing this Bobby & being so honest. I feel you have been very harshly treated. People make mistakes, but you didn’t kill anyone. Don’t let it shape the rest of your life. I hope you are able to move on & make a come back at some point x

@shaunyb92887527: Bobby some of us wolves fans earlier on in season had some beef with you, after reading this fella I’m disgusted with myself in all honesty, no one is perfect Bobby and hopefully your life will turnaround.

@RleEllis: Well done for doing this. So honest. I have a disability,i work in the nhs, some of the dark funny things we say would get us in trouble if they were recorded and got out. We all say things we regret. Hope you can move on now. Hope 2020 is a better year for you. #YNWA

@htafc_family: Wow, quite an emotional heartfelt read this. The media in this country are utterly disgusting but what your so-called friend did was equally so. Fair play for writing this. Good luck in the future.

@Iansmith2468: Good luck in your future Bobby. Unfortunately your governing body and match officials dept treated you as a case number rather than a person. They should have given you a warning that fitted the ‘crime’ rather than throw you under the bus. Well done at keeping your dignity ?

@Danputt96: Very Honest ?? If it was a footballer who made the joke they would be given a fine and lessons. Seems harsh this didn’t happen for you. All the best for 2020

@apopey: Bobby, have a great 2020. You’ve always been a decent & helpful bloke in my experience as well as a great ref. I know you are truly remorseful for a mistake you made. Your story shows that & that there are some truly horrible people out there. You’re not one of them.

@Rob_hicks81: Really impressive read. Opening up in a way like this shows real mental fortitude and resilience. Congratulations on a great career. You will have regrets but remember the highs and happy memories. All the best for 2020
