Football fans slam Chelsea’s pathetic 24-word statement on Russia-Ukraine war

Football fans have took to slam Chelsea’s pathetic 24-word statement on the Russia-Ukraine war ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

The Blues have been scrutinised for their brief statement on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, making no mention of Russia and instead used the word ‘situation’ – leading social media users to take aim at the club.

The invasion has now entered its fourth day with thousands feared to have been killed or injured in the bloodshed, and now Chelsea have broken their silence as they are under renewed scrutiny because of Roman Abramovich’s alleged links to Vladimir Putin and his regime.

On Saturday night, owner Abramovich handed over control of the club to the trustees of the charitable foundation at Stamford Bridge in an eyebrow-raising development.

Abramovich has been chief of the west London outfit since 2003, and the move came after Parliament was told he had been named as a person of interest in 2019.

The oligarch is allegedly also in ‘association with corrupt activity and practices’, but now, the recent statement from Chelsea has done little to prevent further anger.

‘The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating,’ it read. ‘Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace.’

It was claimed at the weekend that any attempts to impose sanctions on Abramovich as a result of the invasion may be disastrous for the club, potentially even going bust.

He was named in papers leaked to an MP that linked him to Putin’s regime, and the release of the Home Office document urged for him to be stripped of his right to own a football club in Britain.

Abramovich denies that he has direct links to Putin or that there are any grounds to sanction him, however.

In his statement on Chelsea’s website, he said: ‘During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

‘I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

‘I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.’

The trustees of the foundation are Bruce Buck, John Devine, Emma Hayes, Piara Powar, Seb Coe and Sir Hugh Robertson.

As mentioned, football fans slam Chelsea’s pathetic 24-word statement on the Russia-Ukraine war…

@rdhuff178: The “situation”? Come on now and call it what it is. It’s an invasion. Do better Chelsea.

@LSaczak: Beyond pathetic.

@Richardmassey82: You spelt Invasion incorrectly

@JJDevaney: If you thought yesterday’s statement was worthless…..

@Craig_Pankhurst: Conflict? This is the most tone-deaf statement a club could push out. You’d have been better off saying nothing than releasing this pathetic statement.

@thfclp__: I didn’t expect anything less from such a scummy classless club.

@Leggett84: Big swing and a miss here 🙃 #fuckPutin

@davidTdonlan: 3 days to release a 24 word statement 🤕

@semajmrx:
“Club statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine”
Fixed it for you.

@alexthechook: This is the most pathetic attempt at saving face Ive ever seen. Disgusting club.

@RyAndMill: Quite possibly the most pointless statement. Better off not saying anything at all.

@Stanford_CFC: The club is really in a tight corner on this issue but I’m proud the way they are handling it

@chrislepkowski: Club statement on the ‘invasion of Ukraine’ is surely more apt?

@gatman77: Jesus, written through gritted teeth

@K_Stanowski: Conflict is something between John Terry and Wayne Bridge. This is war.

@BDStanley: It’s not a “situation”, fellas. And you’re still owned by a man responsible for bankrolling the perpetrator of this war. He comes from a country called “Russia”. If you don’t have the moral courage to say things as they should be said, then best don’t say anything at all.

@RobPooley1976: Just to be clear, it’s not a conflict it’s and invasion and a classed as war… I know it’s delicate because of the owner, but be clear on what it’s is, as innocent men, women and children are dying because of it… 🇺🇦
