It came in the games which saw Norwich play out a thrilling 4-4 draw away at Southampton in the Championship while Milton Keynes Dons picked up a 1-0 win at home to Tranmere in League Two.

Adam Armstrong’s 97th-minute penalty prevented a loss for Southampton eith the curtain-raiser described as a topsy-turvy contest.

Josh Sargent put the Canaries in front early on before Saints hit back to claim the lead through Jan Bednarek and Armstrong’s first spot-kick.

However Norwich fought back and went ahead by half time thanks to goals from Gabriel Sara and Jon Rowe.

Che Adams got the hosts back level before Christian Fassnacht looked to have won it six minutes from time with his first Norwich goal, only for Armstrong to make no mistake with the spot kick at the end.

Norwich City head coach David Wagner said: “It was a top, top performance from the bottom to the top,” Wagner said. “To come here against Southampton, to play the way we’ve done. The bravery, creating chances, scoring goals. We had chances to add even more.

“To be a little bit disappointed after the game, only to be coming away from the game with only a draw only speaks for the character of the group and demands they have on them. But in general, it was a super football match from both teams.

“Both teams wanted to attack, both teams wanted to score goals. There was some mistakes, which will happen. But in general, I think it was a very good performance. We take this point, we recover and then go again.”

The head coach also spoke about the goals conceded, believing some were avoidable and

“Most of the goals are avoidable for me. The first one, there’s a clear push. The referee has to see this. And we scored another goal that was clearly not offside in the second situation. Yes, Ashley was offside when Gabriel Sara shot, but the goalkeeper had a clear view.

“But he makes the save, then we cross the ball in and have a tap-in. No offside situation. This is what annoys me more than the other situations, where maybe you can defend better.

“I’m proud of the players today, they deserve a lot of credit to come away to Southampton and to perform and play the way they’ve done. Tomorrow, and the next few days, there will be things to look back and analyse, but everyone can be proud.”

Then over at MK Dons, Mo Eisa’s early strike saw his side move on to six points after a 1-0 victory to put more misery on Tranmere.

The 29 year old striker has now got two goals in two league games as the home side moved top of League Two on goal difference.

Tranmere’s second league defeat of the season means they now drop to 23rd place after losing 2-1 to Barrow in the previous fixture.

“There will always be things to improve but we’re about dominating score-lines and winning games and that’s what we’ve done in successive league games,” MK Dons boss Graham Alexander said when speaking to the media after Saturday’s win.

“There were things we could have done better but we got the three points and that’s the main thing.”

He continued: “We deserved to win from the first-half performance. We were absolutely excellent in the first-half, and I couldn’t ask for much more apart from some clinical finishing to finish off some of our attacks and further our lead.

“We knew there would be a response from the opposition. Tranmere went a bit more gung-ho in the second-half and they kept changing shape with their subs so it was hard to get a grip on what they were doing.

“There will be games where we play really well when we’ll score goals, like we did last week, but then there will be games, like today, when we have to grind it out.”

Southampton’s Russell Martin: “It was a fair result for both teams. I would have been really upset if we had lost and really gutted for the supporters and players. It was a good advertisement for the Championship.

“It was entertaining. I don’t think either keeper did much wrong – it is madness they both conceded four goals. It was a strange and crazy game and I hope we don’t have many like that. There were too many moments that we wouldn’t have wanted. We gave them too many moments.

“I’m angry and annoyed at conceding four goals but on the other hand I’m proud about the team’s character and being so dominant in some parts. We had 31 shots which is a lot so there is plenty to be proud of but still be annoyed. It is the first time back this season and after last year there was too much nervousness.”

Tranmere manager Ian Dawes spoke about his disappointment after Tranmere Rovers’ defeat to MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s a really tough one to take if I’m honest with you. If we look at the game as a whole we weren’t quite happy with the first half, we weren’t combative enough and felt changes needed to be made and those changes injected a lot of intensity to it but it’s tough to take.

“First half we weren’t happy with it, I wouldn’t say they were great first half we just weren’t happy with us, so changed it.

“Stats and data don’t lie, I think we had 16 shots to their seven and we created some unbelievable chances. I think I would be disappointed if I was standing here and it was a draw so to get beat today hurts.

“I watched their first goal back and there are hints of a foul and a hint of an offside but we’ve got to defend it better. When there are delays in play like that because the lad goes off injured you’ve got to make sure you’re switched on and you deal with it. That was the only threat they had all game, I think first half they were slightly better than us and created chances but nothing like we did second half.”
