Fleetwood appoint ex-Rangers, Blackpool, Liverpool, Stoke, Reading player as new head coach

Fleetwood Town have decided to appoint ex-Rangers, Blackpool, Liverpool, Stoke, Reading player Charlie Adam as their new head coach.

The 38 year old quickly comes in to replace Lee Johnson who had been sacked on Saturday having gone on a run of nine games without a win.

Adam hung up his boots back in 2022 but has now done taken on his first managerial role with a club who are now under their third manager of the season following Lee Johnson and Scott Brown.

Adam had been working as a coach with Burnley as their loan manager, and also with their under-21 players before taking up the role at Fleetwood.

Fleetwood Town are delighted to confirm the appointment of Charlie Adam as the Club’s First-Team Head Coach.

The 38-year-old makes his first step into management following an outstanding playing career, which started with Glasgow Rangers, before making more than 200 English Premier League appearances, whilst also earning 26 caps for his Scottish national team.

Since retiring as a player, Adam has spent the last 18 months at Vincent Kompany’s now Premier League side Burnley as their Under-21s Coach and Loans Manager.

After agreeing terms with Town on New Year’s Eve, Adam said: “I’m delighted to join a club I know well and one which we feel we can make a real difference with.

“I’m inheriting what I think is a strong squad which is more than capable of getting the results needed to climb the table.

“Fleetwood is a hard-working, honest, and passionate town and the football club must reflect that – the players have to be proud to pull the shirt on and represent what the club and the town stands for.

“It’s now important we see togetherness from the players, staff and crucially the supporters to help turn results around – we can’t wait to get started.”

Joining the new Head Coach will be Assistant Coach Maurice Ross and former Fleetwood Town player Ross Wallace, who will be a First-Team Coach, and they will all be on the touchline for Fleetwood Town’s New Year’s Day clash against Shrewsbury Town at the Oteley Road Stadium.
