There were feisty scenes with Sheffield United and Ipswich players having to be held back during a half time bust-up.
Ipswich had the brighter start, although missed early chances, before Sheffield United capitalised on defensive errors, then Callum O’Hare and Andre Brooks put the Blades two up before half time.
Ipswich got one back in the second half when Jack Clarke converted a penalty on 60 minutes after a handball — but Sheffield United quickly restored their two-goal lead through Patrick Bamford, who later went on to get sent off with a second yellow for diving.
The game was described as scrappy, fiery, frenetic, and it boiled over at the break, Christian Walton and Chris Wilder both booked amid bench confrontations, then on the pitch and down by the tunnel, with Sammie Szmodics held back from Sydie Peck, sparking another player pile-in.

As per the TWTD website: “It had been a tetchy half in keeping with Town-Sheffield United games of the late nineties and following the whistle it threatened to boil over.
“Hirst had gone to ground, presumably due to an injury, and Sydie Peck appeared to say or do something which annoyed the Town players, the midfielder running away towards the tunnel with Blues players in his wake with Szmodics looking particularly incensed.
“The Irish international was held back by keeper-coach Rene Gilmartin, while Bamford sought to involve himself in the incident and was dragged back by Furlong.
“Eventually, with the benches also having exchanged words, everyone made their way off the pitch.”
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:
“The feel of today was exactly how I want Bramall Lane always. It was edgy, it was spiky and we played well.
“We went toe-to-toe with a decent side and I believe we deserved the win.
“There’s a lot of noise out there and all we can do is do our best and represent the club in the best way and put a shift in.
“I thought we got everything absolutely spot on. How we set the game plan up in terms of the press and how we managed the game… It’s been a good afternoon for us.”
On Bamford’s red card: “It’s disappointing. I don’t think it was a booking over on the far side. Just manage the game and understand what it’s about.”
Wilder, per Sky Sports:
“It’s been a really difficult week, really difficult. I think we would have come through there (at Southampton). We were a little bit off of it on Wednesday night.
“Obviously playing with nine men for an hour (last weekend) and then the selection that we had to make from a physical point of view. Martin McGuinness dislocated his shoulder on Wednesday night and played. Ben May had a tight hamstring.
“It always just seems that maybe people don’t see what I see and maybe see the other bits and pieces that fly around at a football club.
“It’s contact. I’ve not had a chance to speak to Pat, but he’s right there. (He is) going to be a miss because I thought Pat was great for us and we’ve got a free week and obviously it’s a huge game (at Millwall).”
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:
“I think we had some big moments up until the first goal. They had one or two but we had two or three really where we should go 1-0 up.
“We know that completely changes the complexion of the day and then we’ve gifted them the first goal really. It’s a really, really bad one from us.
“It comes from our set-piece after we’ve just had a big chance to go one up.
“That was a big blow and then we didn’t find enough to get to half-time.
“Second half we had a go, we get a goal back and I really fancy us from there. Really frustrated of course, from a long ball we don’t deal with, we go to 3-1.
“And from there it was just too much to come back into. A disappointing day.”
McKenna, per Sky Sports:
“We’re really frustrated with how the game panned out. I think up until the first goal, there was big chances both ends.
“We had the better chances, probably three big, big moments to go 1-0 up, which of course would have changed the complexion of the game. The third of those chances, of course, is the corner that then they score from.
“But then we have to own the next bit because the first goal was really, really poor for us. We can’t concede that goal from our corner.
“We’re not dealing with the ball well enough. When they get the first goal in a situation like that, the stadium’s going to be up and you have to stay strong until half-time and then they score a second goal.
“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. We got the goal back. And then again, a long ball that we can’t deal with well enough and it’s 3-1. That was then too much to come back from.”
