‘Feel like crying’ – Jeff Stelling reacts and fans boo Hartlepool after 3-0 defeat to Rochdale

‘Feel like crying’ – Jeff Stelling reacts and fans boo Hartlepool after the 3-0 defeat to Rochdale in the National League on Tuesday night.

It was third successive league defeat for the Pools, leaving them 18th in the table with 13 points from 11 games played (W3 D4 L4 GF7 GA10) and are 4 points above the drop zone.

Connor McBride opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, Kairo Mitchell got on the end of the ball with his back to goal and sent it out to McBride who was in acres of space. He kept his composure and dunked it over the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 1-0 Rochdale.

The away side doubled their lead on 58 minutes, Dale putting a great move together, with Kyron Gordon sliding a ball into Adebayo-Rowling, whose low ball found Mitchell two-yards out, making it 2-0.

With just over 10 minutes left to go, a run and superb through ball from Ian Henderson, picked out former Hartlepool player Devante Rodney scores, who made his way round the goalkeeper and slotted for his fifth of the campaign.

Hartlepool were booed off at half time, and after the final whistle. Jeff Stelling tweeted: “Football should not matter so much. But it does. Feel like crying after that. Totally out- footballed. Heading for a Darlo derby at this rate. Btw well done to Rochdale. Played nicely.”

Hartlepool boss Darren Sarll said, per Hartlepool Mail: “If you don’t win, you’re never right.

“There was a real tension tonight, I felt that.

“That’ll be the fans’ feelings towards me after recent results, of course it will, but that’s the game. That’s football, it’s normal.

“I stuck to my beliefs and values, I always try to say thank you for coming, I always try to show respect.

“If they want to show their opinions then good on them, they pay their money.”

He added: “The more attacking players we put on, I thought the worse we were offensively.

“The biggest goalscorer in any game is winning the ball back high up the pitch, having the shortest distance to goal and the fewest amount of passes needed to get there.

“By increasing our attacking threat, we’ve reduced our ability to take the ball back.

“It’s a fine line between getting them in an organised shape and allowing them to think freely.

“We’ve tried to loosen the reins to try and have more creativity but I think we’ve gone further away from the objective.

“It hasn’t looked like one of my teams in the last couple of games.”

Here’s what Twitter users had to say while Jeff Stelling reacts and fans boo Hartlepool after the 3-0 defeat to Rochdale…

@FTM1042: Bad to worse for Hartlepool. I just thought as well Hartlepool were starting to just take control of the game and to find a way to get a equaliser but yet again not applying enough pressure on the ball & allowing Rochdale to break forward & counter attack far too easily. Victory for Rochdale complete. Hartlepool have being too easy to play against tonight but credit to Rochdale well organized tonight and there’s being a structure to Rochdale’s play whereas Hartlepool no style of play. No formula. Nobody fighting or showing any spirit.

@footydevotion: Sarll makes Hartley look like Pep. Absolutely criminal how he has wasted the potential in this squad, how he is a football manager is beyond me.

@1908pools: Fans made it clear at the end

@PAJ1982: 6 individual players have scored more National League goals than Hartlepool United this season, three have scored more!! Anyone involved in the process to appoint this fraud should be nowhere near any future decisions. When will the horrendous mismanagement of our club end?

@joolsHUFC: No one can say we wouldn’t have scored more than 1 home goal all season if kept Phillips on. Another masterstroke

@anthonystevenh7: Fucking 18th! 4 pts off the bottom with this squad ! Performances are getting worse absolutely nothing there and no fucking goals or even creating any well done that stupid bunch of board member fucking tits! Go get fucked sarll absolute cabbage

@William94161728: Club announcement by 10pm and emergency pod by 11am tomorow needed @HUFCChat

@joolsHUFC: No red cards. Well done lads

@benhope1997: We’re yet to see his high pressing team! One goal at home is a joke! Played better football under Paul Hartley than the last few performances! He’s lost the dressing room and probably lost the fans after that tonight!

@PGloverOfficial: I’d love Sarll to tell somebody what the plan is. We just don’t look like we know what we are doing. I’d be shocked if we’ve created more than 5 chances in half a dozen games.

@NickMcNaughton: 1 goal in 6 home games with a team made up of Mancini, Grey, Madine, Campbell and not forgetting Mani D who scored 23 times last season. Sarll out

@WinwoodBailey: That was horrendous… There’s no way sarll can win back the fans now, great decision from the board once again 👏🏻

@benlee987: It usually one to call for a manager to be sacked but the team looks clueless, no plan, no structure and they look lost. His arrogance and rudeness in interviews makes it so much worse when he is looking pretty out of his depth.

@Trevandbev21: Very sad 😢 Potential in players, but where’s the skill, style, structure, desire to win!!

@MrDonBall: 1 goal in 6 at home. Embarrassing and pathetic yet again

@Poolieboy1Les1: The only good thing about tonight’s defeat is that it has made my mind up for me and I will not be having a drive down to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday. Save myself a few quid.

@JackCBCx: Absolutely shocking, team looks half decent on paper, but not with this muppet in charge.

@Pools1908: Let’s not mess about. Get rid and give us a chance for the season. I think we have a great squad but the management has fucked this right up

@JamesDaley11: Inexcusable. Get him gone tonight man, not for a clue what he’s doing, players look absolutely bereft of ideas. Pathetic

@TBradley23: The decision to not keep Kevin Phillips on and at least give him the start of the season is looking more naive and foolish by the week. We’re almost entering “complete mismanagement” from the board territory. Sarl’s style of play at home is rank bad. Tonight proves it.

@JohnAmunds55043: 1 goal in first 6 home games must surely be the worst in our 117 year history. Tonight was as bad as anything in last 2 seasons. Huge questions are there for the manager, none of the players looked bothered – they are professionals, and should be ashamed of that performance.

@ScottDa85736568: we’ve all been conned by this bloke Sarll, he is a bullshit bully who has no idea whatsoever how to motivate individuals and it’s a travesty that we have a team (on paper) who are capable of a play off place but have been devoid of a manager who can get the best out of them!

@HUFC_Charlie: Sack everyone

@JamieSpence93: Cheers lads can totally see why we binned Phillips for Sarll.
