The bookies favourites to become the next England manager is changing one more amid calls to sack Gareth Southgate after the Italy defeat.
Southgate’s job looks less secure after England were relegated from the Nations League’s top tier with a lacklustre 1-0 defeat on Friday night.
The Three Lions reached the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and lost the Euro 2020 final on penalties but have struggled of late and in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
England have gone five matches without a win for the first time since 2014, and have gone five competitive matches without winning for the first time since 1992.
England have failed to score in their last three matches, their longest run without a goal since November 2000.

– Not scored from open play in 450+ minutes

England are also one of only two nations yet to score a single non-penalty goal in the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League. The other nation is San Marino.
But, hey, everything is fine according to Gareth Southgate and Declan Rice. The boss claims their performances are going in the right direction whilst the Hammers player thinks the squad will come good because they score a huge amount on the training pitch.
The Three Lions failed to win any of their four June fixtures and produced a uninspiring response to their 4-0 Molineux thrashing against Hungary, with Giacomo Raspadori sealing Roberto Mancini’s Italy a 1-0 victory on Friday night.
A fifth-straight game without a win means Southgate’s men have been relegated from Group A of the Nations League – a competition they finished third in three years ago – with a game to spare.
Boos were heard at the San Siro as the full time whistle blew.
Southgate did however admitted he understood the frustration from the travelling fans: “It’s really difficult to pinpoint why we are not scoring. I think we are getting into the right areas. We had the moments where we would have the pass but we just didn’t deliver that final piece of quality tonight,” he reflected.
“I understand the reaction at the end because that’s the results we have had in this competition. It’s an understandable emotional reaction.”
No cohesion, no shape, no belief. But no surprise what happened here in Milan. #ENG on the slide under Southgate since Mancini outwitted him in 2nd half of Euro final. England have a crop of good players being wasted by Southgate. Report from San Sirohttps://t.co/1iGlxX2TFU

The England boss was pleased with his side’s performance, however. He added: “It’s difficult for me to be too critical of the performance. We had more possession, more shots, more shots on target.
“For large parts of the game we played very well. We didn’t deal with the decisive moment defensively. We had moments where we had the chance to be decisive in their final third which our quality wasn’t quite right.
“It’s a spell where ultimately results are going to be the thing that everyone reacts to but I thought there were a lot of positives for us as a team tonight.
“Lots of good individual performances. I personally thought the performance is a step in the right direction. I completely understand because of the result that is not going to be the reaction.”

With the favourites to become next England manager updated amid calls to sack Gareth Southgate after the Italy defeat, this is what everyone had to say…
@Richard_hammond: Southgate needs sacking
@stonbank: Finally. Someone with some balls to say what everyone else been saying for months or even years in my case. He’s a Charlatan
@StLadders: No plan B. Shows how much of a mistake it was to drop Rashford and Sancho, the replacements are awful.
@TheRealRo88o: I’ve said it all along @GarethSouthgate should of gone after the euros he is a championship manager at best
@hughjass585: Henry, we have bags full of attacking talent but play with the belief of a League 2 side who have drawn a Premier League giant. We sit back and hope we get a sniff on the break instead of letting the teams attacking players terrorise the opposition. It’s painful to watch
@The_Smills: I think you are being a bit generous, Henry. The signs have been there all along but he’s been relatively lucky at a couple of tournaments.
@BuenoBielsa: They were like a mid table championship team AGAIN last night. Shockingly awful lacking imagination direction passion purpose and let’s face it Italy aren’t great either! Middlesbrough v Rotherham was a a higher standard last week.
@adamjamesred: It’s all too safe, too cautious. Southgate would be cut more slack by fans results-wise (i.e. accepting of the odd defeat) if he allowed his creative players to express themselves more and take a few risks.
@KevScales: Spot on. He’s such a negative manager. These players need the shackles taking off.
@Rick19Palmer: I’m afraid this team, with the current manager, peaked in the Euros. They will be very fortunate to make the quarter finals in the upcoming World Cup. I so hope I’m wrong. #ENG
@Ryan_Langley: Get in Poch on a short term for World Cup and then build for the future with a long term manager
@jim_smythe: It goes back further than the Euros. Think back to Croatia game in the last World Cup where the midfield was being totally dominated, we could all see it and he just did nothing til after it cost us. Snubbing players like Maddison and (until recently) Grealish doesn’t help
@splanty19: Southgate will be an asset to the FA upstairs. However, this group of players deserve more than a risk averse coach who was unable to integrate top players like Grealish until he was forced to & now Maddison. Too late for this World Cup, but a Rodgers/Potter type coach is a must.
@tubbytriathlete: your expectations under Southgate were what? Continues to pick out of form players and stick with his slow turgid defensive style he is a decent man just a really poor coach who is just picking his favourites where was Maddison why pick Toney then not have on bench at least
@SimonM_NHS: Needs a refresh. Southgate has done a great job in getting us to play tournament style football and engaging the country with the national team again but it needs a bolder approach to take the next step. Only problem is no outstanding candidate for the job
@BrianClough7: Southgate wasn’t outwitted he was plain fearful. He set us up to contain Italy because he feared going full throttle at them in case they picked us off. You gotta have belief in your players and yourself to beat anyone. He bottled it!!!
@MW1_237: Dull tactics that would send a glass eye to sleep 💤 Weird formations/systems. Players ridiculously out of position. Picking players that barely play club football. Playing most of the game with our backs to goal. What a guy. #SouthgateOut
@poggiolino: Isn’t it amazing that, amid all of the Southgate idolatry in the last couple of years, nobody pointed out that he is effectively a Championship manager? Well, some of us tried…
@GPDecorating: Good to see the press guys are finally catching up to what most football fans have been saying about Southgate for the last few years. Out of his depth, too cautious in his approach despite some great attacking options, tactically outthought at this level.
@kamkel72: You also have to look at the players Henry. Only a handful of players in that squad are in any kind of form for their clubs. We need to start picking players who are in form and are playing regularly. Selection based on the past is not going to cut it in a World Cup
@BrianVesey2: Most of us have seen this coming for a long time. But last night was a turning point. The penny has finally dropped for his supporters. The players also now realise and confidence is rock bottom. Too late now the WC sadly. A great ambassador but a truly awful manager.
