Favourites to become new Newport County manager after David Hughes leaves his role

We look at the favourites to become new Newport County manager after David Hughes leaves his role after six months in charge.

His final game in charge was a 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury, leaving the Exiles sitting bottom of League Two, having won only three of their 16 league matches this season.

Hughes confirmed his exit via BBC Radio Wales before the club announced his departure, saying: “The reality would be it is going to be someone else’s challenge moving forward.

“My time has come to an end. I understand why, we have not won enough games.

“I have spoken to the players and wished them all the best. Let’s hope the next manager coming in can give them a bounce.”

A brief club statement read: “Newport County AFC can confirm that, following a disappointing start to the season, the club has parted company with Head Coach Dave Hughes and Assistant Manager Wayne Hatswell.”

FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW NEWPORT MANAGER:

BetVictor – 17th November
Mark Sampson – 2/1
Steve Evans – 6/1
Garry Monk – 8/1
Cameron Toshack – 8/1
Rhys Carr – 8/1
Rob Page – 8/1
Michael Flynn – 8/1
Lee Kendall – 12/1
David Hughes said after the game: “We had two chances really early that we have to take. We said before the game that if we get a break through and get that chance, you’re thinking they would have to come onto the front foot and we could exploit the spaces. With that first goal, the supporters here might get a little bit hostile towards the home team.”

“I don’t think there was anything in the game. For me, it should have been 0-0. The goal is avoidable. We probably give Jordan a challenge by throwing it back to him, then we don’t land on seconds. We try to play when we should just hook it clear. It’s symptomatic of this season and losing by the odd goal.

“I can’t fault the lads’ effort and application. They’ve been a credit to themselves. Yes, we’ve made mistakes, everyone makes mistakes, but I’m not going to criticise their commitment.

“The supporters again have been terrific. You often see teams down the bottom and the atmosphere gets hostile or volatile, but the way they supported the players today, the way they backed them consistently, they’ve been a credit to the players and a credit to the club. We can’t thank them enough.”

Here’s how fans reacted with the favourites to become new Newport County manager revealed after David Hughes leaves his role…

@caitlinjjwebb: They’ve never been the problem! 🧡🖤 I feel sickened, especially for Hatswell! Huw Jenkins all shame on YOU!

@MarkGCoffey: Sorry to see Hughes go, I don’t think he was the issue. It’s good to try and bring on young players in a squad, but you can’t have a whole team of them. We are getting beaten by teams who aren’t technically any better, but have older hands on board who know the League 2 game.

@carlhj2010: Anyone that’s watched League 2 football over the last 10 years would know you can’t fill half your squad with 23 year olds with no league experience. Disgraceful to use our club as an experiment.

@NCAFCThoughts: Sorry what? You’ve sacked one of the finest minds in British soccer

@SpencerVignes: Probably the right decision, based on results, but I don’t think Jürgen Klopp would have a prayer at the reins of County under the present regime.

@MrMulcahy: Huw, do the population of NP a favour, and go away (you have not “invested” as much as you claim). You are damaging the football club and sacking the coaching staff that you hired is on you (and costing the club). I know that you’re a right west walian 🙄. NCAFC are left in disarray after another defeat. The Exileders are devoid of hope after such a poor performance from both teams. A media person would say, the Club Chairman either needs to listen to industry experts or walk. Our on the ground correspondent suggests the latter.

@andy_ncfc: Had to be done. Another terrible appointment. Couple that with abysmal players simply not up to it and it was inevitable. Next appointment biggest in our recent history for sure. Jenkins, Don’t go for the cheap option again or another academy PowerPoint pro @1912Exiles

@OffTheLineBlog: I’m always a bit wary of appointing an academy coach. Very different to first team football. I’m disappointed for Hatswell; he has a genuine love for the club. Won’t change a great deal, I feel. Not got the players nor the investment in my view. A wake up call for Jenkins.

@charlieej_: ‘disappointing start to the season’ is the biggest understatement of all time 😂😂😂 we are fucking doomed

@BillOKeefe14: Jenkins now has to be step up and sort it. The focus is firmly on him now. No excuses.

@JPouch: Huw Jenkins fault… should have brought in an experienced manager! DH & WH could only chose the players that HJ brought in!! And if some of the players don’t want to play, or have long term injuries, they should go too because they’re helping to take the club down!!!

@1971somerton: Dave hughes a scapegoat, he was never the tools to work with, I believe him , when he says he’s done all he can, I believe he worked really hard with the players , but constantly banging his head a against a brick wall, this is down to Jenkins and his ridiculous policies

@vickdawg92: Jenkins at fault for this mess thinking he can sign bang average non league players and turn a profit on them most shouldn’t be near a parks pitch

@NEWA69: This is Huw Jenkins fault!

@JFab208: The owner did not learn from last season…..he is to blame, You cannot sign players with zero experience & expect any coach to get results in league 2.

@TebbyNCAFC: Hughes scapegoat for that idiots experiment , still going down , just might not be until February now 👍🏽

@Watty2702: I am sorry for Hughes, BUT not enough experience. For me too many team changes each week and with that complicated Formations changing all the while a Striker who would find it hard to light a match. Big Job now i think they have someone. Jenkins has not done well. Time he did!

@joewightman10: Shame for Hughes but there hasn’t been any signs of progress or optimism all season. Hope we get some investment in January to support whoever comes in. UTC.
