Favourites for Gillingham manager

After Steve Lovell was sacked by Gillingham after 18 months in charge last week, we’ve taken a look at who are favourites for the job at Priestfield.

The League One side have axed him with two games of the season remaining, he had a year remaining on his contract and leaves them 12th in the table.

Lovell came in over November 2017, after initially being an interim boss for the departed Peter Taylor in a month earlier.

Glyn Hodges is currently assistant manager at AFC Wimbledon.

He and Wally Downes have help turn things around the the League One side, taking them from 23rd and seven points from safety to 19th and two points clear of the drop while also guiding them to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Hodges has been a caretaker at Barnsley, managed the Stoke under 23s team and had coaching roles with Blackburn, Fulham, Man City and QPR.

Chris Powell has been without a job since the 26th of March after he was sacked at Southend United.

He took the club to 20th in the table and were only outside the relegation places on goal difference due to a run of 11 games without a win.

“The results over a number of weeks has impacted all concerned and immediate changes needed to be made,” said a club statement.

He has previously managed Huddersfield and Charlton as well as be a caretaker at Derby and Leicester.

Powell also had a playing career, playing as a left back for Crystal Palace, Aldershot, Southend, Derby, Charlton, West Ham, Watford and Leicester.

As a manager, he won League One with the Addicks in 2011–12, was League One Manager of the Month in November 2011, January 2012, February 2012 and was named League Managers Association League One Manager of the Year also in 2011–12.

Mark Patterson is currently caretaker manager of Gillingham.

He has played for Carlisle United, Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and had 120 appearances for the Gills.

After being assistant manager at Folkestone Invicta, Patterson returned to Gillingham as youth team manager until 2010. He was then the club’s development coach, and subsequently assistant to manager Steve Lovell.
