Fans walk out on 75th minute angered by Lee Grant and Huddersfield players in defeat to Wycombe

Fans walk out on 75th minute angered by Lee Grant and Huddersfield players in their 3-0 defeat away to Wycombe.

There were early chances from the Terriers’ Leo Castledine and Marcus Harness, but Huddersfield struggled after Alfie May was shown a red card in the 25th minute for a two-footed lunge on Fred Onyedinma.

Wycombe took control, with Cauley Woodrow finding the opener with a near-post header seven minutes before the break, followed by Fred Onyedinma’s well-taken strike from outside the box with 15 minutes remaining.

Daniel Vost saw his own goal five minutes later sealed Huddersfield’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions.

Lee Grant said to HTTV: “About as tough an end to a game as you can get. About as sore as we can feel, about as angry, disappointed and upset as we can feel.

“The emotion in the stadium, on the pitch, on the side, I think we’re all shared in that emotion. When you lose a game in that fashion, it really hurts, it stings, you can’t hide from that.

“There will be a sense for all of us that the second-half performance leads to where we end up in the game, and that’s a real disappointment, because the first half we didn’t show any signs of that, and the second half we stray away from the things that we hold dear, our values, the things that served us really well in the first half, and we’re punished in the worst way for it.

“Do I feel like the group were trying? Yes I do. I feel like they wanted to win that game so badly that perhaps it affected the mentality, and how we went about that second half, and therein lies the lesson for us as a group.

“There’s no doubt about it, this is going to be one of the most painful ones we have, and can have. For us as staff, for the players themselves collectively, of course individually as well, there’s no doubt about it, you have to be ready, honest and open to look at it, and to take it firmly on the chin.

“Conversation yes, work yes, open and honesty yes, all of those things are important, because to come away from the things that you did so well in the first period, that’s probably the biggest disappointment I think for all of us as a group.

“We’ll be in tomorrow (Friday) to make sure that we look at this. We don’t waste any time in hiding or shying away from the things that we do well, and we have to be the same when things don’t go our way,” the Terriers’ boss said.

“Very quickly we have to be in, we have to look at it, we have to really be honest about why we end up in a 93 and 95 (the timing of the two goals), two situations that we shouldn’t be in, and we have to make sure we put that right.”

Huddersfield Town defender Joe Low added:

“Frustrated — you know, things happened in the game that changed the game, and then it’s just how you react to that. It’s always tough with ten-men, always has been, always will be. It’s hard to put into words.

“It happens, and it will happen again. You’ve just got to roll your sleeves up and carry on with what comes your way. It’s difficult circumstances of course.

“We changed shape. We tried to change to have a chance at changing the game, but they made it really difficult for us. We try and play out, try and change it, because we aren’t getting any luck with going long, and yeah, it’s difficult.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted after seeing fans walk out on 75th minute angered by Lee Grant and Huddersfield players in defeat to Wycombe…

@I_am_Adz: Sack him. Send ledson with him. Release wiles. Then Nagle get a fucking director of football who can get a decent manager or fuck off yourself.

@SButtoo: Stupid and unforgivable from May yes. But the disastrous scenario and result that played out after that should be all that Nagle needed to see that Grant HAS TO GO NOW! Very telling that we’ve played against teams who’ve gone to down to 10 and had no idea how to beat them.. #htafc

@SxlterYT: I’m all for backing managers but what actually does Grant have to offer. No ideas no passion just the same murmurs and the group will learn crap!!! The instructions are so poor that players don’t have any idea on how to play together. We got lucky at first as other teams like us were still learning to play with each other but now everyone is comfortable and we somehow are still in that learning stage that isn’t getting any better. It’s very clear by just looking at players like Alfie May Grant is the problem

@TerrierNigel: Don’t want to hear another peep out of you until it’s a photo with a corner flag.

@Woolleygiants: @KevinNagleMLS what you have done off the pitch is great but on the pirch where it counts it has been an utter disaster and its getting worse. Get a manager who knows what he is doing before its too late.

@NobleofLiam: Doubled my season ticket cost for this shite 😂 the worst bit of it all is that we have fucked about with managers so much that no manager with any credibility wants to touch us with a barge pole. We either wait too long (Moore) or don’t give them enough time (Duff)

@HowardTatt60623: Its disappointing for sure, We are learning as a group individually and collectively for sure, We will go back to the classroom for sure looking forward to getting a full week with the group out on the grass for sure

@andymortby: Just got back, another away day collapse , bunch of wasters who don’t care led by a project out of his depth. There’s no fight, passion, leadership. Fans deserve so much more @KevinNagleMLS

@vvillharris: Woeful tactics again. 11v10, sitting on the edge of our own box for 70 minutes and waiting for the inevitable instead of having a go is unforgivable – Stockport showed us how to play with 10. Then leaving Ashia on the bench and not making all our subs again.

@htafcneutral: No shot for over 70 minutes. Absolute disgrace get him gone now

@samfarnell17: Grants unwillingness to play players in their actual positions in a system that suits them will ultimately be his downfall. You cannot keep playing the same way when it’s clear that it’s not working and hope things will miraculously change.

@Liambullz: @KevinNagleMLS I respect you but now you have to respect that Lee Grant isn’t working. You know it makes sense. We go again next game. Hopefully in a better frame of mind. UTT

@markykilroy: Our football on the pitch is out of control, as has been the case since Warnock. Bring in an experienced and successful football leader, let them take control of the football, transfers everything. Who would gamble this much investment on inexperienced managers and directors?

@theheadfather: Lee Grant makes Rachel Reeves look competent
