Fans urge Southgate to drop Pickford after yet another howler

Fans urge England manager Gareth Southgate to drop Jordan Pickford after yet another goalkeeping howler for Everton in their game against Brighton.

At the time, the Toffees had been 1-0 up thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who got his ninth goal in what is turning out to be an outstanding season for him.

On the 16th minute, a corner is played short and then whipped towards the far post by Gylfi Sigurdsson where Calvert-Lewin, who this week was called up to the England team, rises to power home his ninth goal of the season.

However the lead didn’t last too long, as just under half an hour later, Leandro Trossard hit a shot into the ground from Tariq Lamptey’s great cross and an awkward bounce caught out Pickford, who spilled the ball for Neal Maupay to hook in.

Former Chelsea and Scotland winger, Pat Nevin, said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “That’s a dreadful error! Really poor. There was no power in it at all. I know the conditions are bad out there but as a goalkeeper at any standard, you just have to grab that one!”

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Garth Crooks said on on Final Score: “If you’re a Premier League goalkeeper you need to do better than that. It’s almost schoolboy-like. The first ball he doesn’t catch, but then he tries to retrieve the ball. It’s all very odd.

“It all sucks the confidence out of the back four. When the back four starts to lose confidence in your goalkeeper, that’s serious. There’s a question mark about their goalkeeper now.

“I think Mat Ryan is a better goalkeeper than Jordan Pickford.”

Everton managed to get back in front just before the half time whistle blew, Yerry Mina as he headed in James Rodriguez’s free kick to make it 2-1.

James Rodriguez made it 3-1 on the 52nd minute. Leandro Trossard lost the ball, Calvert-Lewin passed to Alex Iwobi wide left and the substitute crosses to the far post where the unmarked Rodriguez fired home.

On the 71st minute, Everton countered quickly as Alex Iwobi found Abdoulaye Doucoure and the midfielder clipped the ball across goal where Brighton inexplicably decided not to mark James Rodriguez again and the Colombian made no mistake.

Just when Brighton it looked as though threatening to get back into this, Everton put it to bed with another excellent attacking display.

Pickford’s error comes just a few weeks since he gifted League One side Fleetwood Town two goals in Everton’s Carabao Cup third round clash as his performance again came into question.

It was a fairly routine win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side but the 5-2 scoreline did not tell the whole story.

The England number 1 took the headlines for yet more mistake that let Joey Barton’s side back into the game. He will not want to watch the replays back, but you can below..

Fans couldn’t help but take to Twitter to laugh and urge Gareth Southgate to drop Pickford from the England squad after yet another howler…
