Fans troll Reece James and Bettinelli after ‘horrific’ own goal in Chelsea friendly

Fans have took to troll Reece James and Bettinelli after the ‘horrific’ own goal in a friendly between Chelsea and Club America..

Goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount came either side of the defender’s mistake as Thomas Tuchel’s side beat the Mexican side 2-1 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

James had gone from hero to villain in Las Vegas, after helping Werner open the scoring 10 minutes into the second-half with a great cross.

Tuchel changed the entire starting line-up for the second half and James’ blunder then levelled the scoring. But then Mason Mount put the Premier League club ahead again with a delightful curled finish into the far corner.

Supporters didn’t forget James’ gaffe in a hurry, and got footage of it published ready for footie fans to see waking up first thing back in the UK.

Reece James scores a shocking own goal in Chelsea’s pre-season match against Club America 😳

The video shows Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta and Mount combining to dispossess an attacker from Chelsea’s opponents, before Mount pokes it to his England team-mate, who is standing on the corner of the penalty area.

Noticing an opponent was getting set to press third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, the 22-year-old then hit a powerful backpass towards goal, only for the ball to go past the stricken keeper and into an empty net.

New arrivals Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly didn’t feature but they will be put in for later games in the pre-season schedule.

After the match, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said: ‘Normally you start against a lower team where you find your rhythm. You could see that they’ve already started their season.

‘They showed a physical game that we had to adapt to, I’m happy nobody got injured. It was sometimes on the edge for a friendly game, especially for us.

‘It was OK. We adapted, accepted it and didn’t get frustrated.’

Speaking for the first time about the impact ex-Napoli defender Koulibaly can have, Tuchel was gushing in his praise.

‘He brings experience, quality, top defending, height and everything what we are looking for,’ the German said.

‘It’s a brilliant signing for us, we hope he can show his quality as soon as possible. We are very happy.’

The Blues now fly across the States to the east coast ahead of our next American pre-season friendly against Charlotte next week.

As mentioned, fans took to troll Reece James and Bettinelli after the ‘horrific’ own goal in the Chelsea friendly at the weekend…

@cyz_skye: What the fuck

@10_wanga: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 We are officially back for sure

@CFCHaddock: Portraying Rudiger’s ‘assist’ to Mendy against Sheffield United last year 😂

@Spursonly4Spurs: Tf is the keeper doing??😂😂😂

@gideonkojo1: RJ didn’t look up .. keepers move out of the line to get back passes incase of situations like this

@Khunlhey_Avatar: Nah! The Goalkeeper shouldn’t move away from the goal there, that was too close. What if the opposition steals the ball, they’ll literally have an open goal to aim at.

@sangarestan: I thought Reece was better than Trent? 😹😹

@kpresz24: this is keepers fault tbh

@SamueILFC: Doesn’t excuse him to make a horrific pass lmao

@Jay_D_CFC: The more I watch this the more I’m starting to question Bettinelli 🤣🤣🤣

@CarefreeJonty: You’re taught to never play the ball directly towards the goal so some blame is shifted on Reece. However, it took Bettinelli 3-5 business days to react 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@_mrjwilson: Bettinelli had btts

@JoshuaHirst13: The keeper wasn’t in the wrong, if you watch any football game the goalkeeper will always take that position next to the goal on the side of the ball. Reece James just didn’t show awareness before making the pass, simple as that really

@Psyduck1980: 100% the keepers fault. What on earth was he doing – checking his Insta?!?!
