Watch Charlie Mulgrew score an extraordinary own goal to help Sunderland beat Dundee United in Saturday afternoon’s pre-season friendly.
Trai Hume’s header and a comedy own-goal saw the Black Cats see off their former manager Jack Ross’ Dundee United to earn their first win of a pre-season schedule.
Sunderland, who saw their game against Rangers in Portugal abandoned at half-time due to a powercut when they were leading 1-0, and then fell to defeat against Roma in midweek, returned to the UK and produced a convincing victory at Tannadice Park.
Hume headed Alex Neil’s side in front against the Scottish Premiership outfit just after half time, before the Terrors defender Charlie Mulgrew’s overhit a backpass which caught out his own goalkeeper and rolled into the back of the net shortly after the hour.

Sunderland could have scored more goals with Ross Stewart in particular passing up a couple of good opportunities, with his name making the Twitter trends list during the afternoon.
But this was still a positive pre-season performance to come away and reflect on, two weeks before the Championship campaign begins and it gave manager Alex Neil the opportunity to give new signing Aji Alese a 25-minute run-out from the bench and he impressed on his debut.
Neil named only three of the players in his starting line-up that began against Roma in Portugal in midweek, with Anthony Patterson, Dennis Cirkin, and Leon Dajaku retained.
Sunderland XI: Patterson, Hume, Ballard, Wright (Alese, 65), Cirkin, Evans, Neil, Roberts, Pritchard, Dajaku, Stewart (Diamond, 65)
Substitutes: Carney, Alese, Batth, OβNien, Winchester, Matete, Gooch, Embleton, Clarke, Sonha, Diamond, Taylor
Dundee United XI: Eriksson, Smith, McMann, Mulgrew, Niskanen, Edwards, Sibbald, Meekison, Harkes, Watt, MacLeod
Subs: Adams, Graham, Clark, Chalmers, Glass, Freeman, Mochrie, Cudjoe, Watson, Duffy, Thompson

Interviewer: Alex, our third pre season outing today, did you get everything you wanted out of the game?
AN: Yeah, that’s I thought, I thought a lot of play in the first half was very good. You know, I thought the only bit that was lacking was probably the final third. But what you tend to find in pre season is that’s the normally the last thing to come because it’s that little bit of sharpness, the legs are then not heavy when you’re starting the season, where as at the moment it’s tough because I train hard throughout the week because it’s preseason. But I thought in terms of patterns controlling the game and how we set out to play, I thought the boys did it very well. Β And obviously what we didn’t do, I don’t think we crossed the ball enough. We spoke about that half time, first cross goes on the box and we get a goal. So, yeah, that was nice. And then the good thing was they changed a lot and they brought a lot of fresh legs on. So our boys had to really dig in that last 15-20 minutes and the legs are heavy and that’s exactly what it’s about.
Interview: Pleased Hume got a goal, starting to see the best of him. He came in in January. It’s not an easy time to settle in, but he looks really settled now and looks like we’re starting to see the best of him.
AN: Yeah, I think it’s difficult, I mean, no disrespect to Linfield, but it’s hard to go from Linfield and obviously the environment and expectation that comes with that, that’s tough. So, yeah, he’s done well over that spell. He’s on the right, obviously, this year to give us a crack and see how we go. And I thought he performed well today. I thought it looked fit, I thought it was strong. Got his first goal, which is excellent. So, yeah, really pleased. I think that the way we structure our preseason has been very good because we’ve had very limited injuries across the squad, which is excellent. So, yeah, I hope that continues.

Fans reacted as they watch Charlie Mulgrew score an extraordinary own goal to help Sunderland beat Dundee United…
@Tomgreenwood78: Was fully expecting this to be a belter free kick
@MichaelPotts_: Ross Stewart is so good he convinces ex-Premier League defenders that lashing it into their own net from the halfway line is preferable to what he’d do to them π¦ #SAFC (In case you’re sat there wondering what Charlie Mulgrew is up to these days…)
@ALS_Fanzine: Charlie Mulgrew comes off for Dundee. Jack Ross will be seething with his Vergini-esque goal
@liss_russ: What you doing @charlie_mulgrew π©π©π©
@JoelSkivington: some goal that
@TonyHamilton14: Pick up the tempo and then slicks his hair back πππ
@WhatTheFalkPod: Excellent goal from Charlie Mulgrew that. And by excellent, I mean bizarre and quite funny.
@ColSafc86: Wow some finish ππΌ
@roooiunc: Whatβs the keeper doing
@RyanElliott_23: One of the worst Iβve ever seen
@wwm1966: Tbf… some strike π
@al_strac: Why would a keeper be so high up the field with the ball in his own half. Regardless of argument that is the keeper at fault there. Stay in the box and you won’t have a problem
@John55646853: Ooft heβs pure raging int he π
@WEWYRB: He had a tenner on Sunderland
@bluekid877: Stevie Clarke will be giving him a Scotland call up next.
@archiejsuthe: I mean that’s not entirely the keeper’s fault. I mean both are to blame but Mulgrew should know better than that. If you’re gonna play a 70 yard back pass look where the keeper is first and play it slowly.
@BillyKersse: Sensational ππ
@Deelerious1893: Just rare high comedy.
@TheDerryCoo: He’s raging aye?
@DanSimo97: and thats already OG of the season π€£
@CMFraser92: Thought it was 20 yards, wasn’t paying attention, even further hahahahaha yinted are shite.
@Baldy_Bassey: Probably kicking the ball to his wean in the car parkβ¦
