Fans take the piss out of viral footage posted by Gillingham

Fans have decided to take the piss out of some viral footage which was posted by Gillingham at the weekend in their League One opener.

The Gills claimed a first-day point against Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon, the Imps took a fourth-minute lead through Tayo Edun, but their celebrations inside the home fans’ section led to an inevitable confrontation, read more on that HERE.

Gills levelled just before the break with a scrambled effort from Danny Lloyd, and now a video of the fans’ celebrations is doing the rounds online.

Gillingham supporters were back inside Priestfield to watch a competitive fixture for the first time in 526 days.

The match came with had an edge, with Steve Evans doing what seems to be tradition these days in picking up a booking for dissent.

Having fallen a goal down, Gillingham almost made it 1-1 when Vadaine Oliver’s header came off the bar and dropped for Max Ehmer, who was then denied by a super block from keeper Josh Griffiths.

Oliver had another chance from a deep corner, hitting a low effort that Griffiths again got behind.

However, the Lincoln keeper went on to make a costly mistake prior to the break when Kyle Dempsey sqw his free-kick blocked, then Dan Phillips sent the ball back into the box and when the keeper spilled the ball, Lloyd was there to make sure it crossed the line.

The referee wasn’t initially going to give the goal, not covinced whether over there was a foul or if the ball had crossed the line, though the linesman gave the signal that the goal should stand and 1-1 it was.

You could tell Gillingham vice skipper Stuart O’Keefe was thrilled to have fans in attendance at Priestfield on Saturday.

He said, as mentioned by KentOnline: “We really missed them for 18 months.

“It really gives the game an edge, makes a difference, you can really feel the Rainham End alost trying to pull the ball into the net, which is a massive plus for us.”

“Second half we had a bit more of a go,” he said on the game. “On another day we possibly might have nicked it, it is good to be off the mark, good to be back infront of a crowd and good to get the season rolling, onwards and upwards really.

“They got the early goal which always knocks you out of your stride, everything goes out of the window a bit, but we grew into the game and people could see we were more confident and we believed a bit more, got closer to their players and put them under a bit more pressure.

“The goal just before half time helped, giving us a real belief that we could actually beat them, we could hurt them and we showed that in the second half.

“Ideally we would have liked the second goal, to get three points, and get up and running but they will feel they had chances as well.”
