Fans stunned with Stockport set to sign 9-goal League One striker

Fans have been left stunned on Friday afternoon with Stockport County set to sign a 9-goal League One striker in Paddy Madden.

The 31 year old Fleetwood Town striker is set to join the Hatters on loan, Football Insider understands, with National League clubs able to sign outside of the transfer window.

A source has told Football Insider that the deal for Madden is at the advanced stage and expected to be completed.

It would represent a real coup for Stockport who are eyeing a return to the EFL after 10 years in non league football.

Madden has scored seven goals in 31 League One appearances this season for Fleetwood and became the club’s top scorer in the EFL earlier in the campaign. In all competitions he’s scored nine.

However, he has not started any of their last five games after suffering from the coronavirus last month.

The 31-year-old has impressively scored 112 times in 343 League One games which puts him just 10 goals behind the division record holder Ian Henderson.

Stockport are fourth in the National League table, seven points behind league leaders Sutton United and Notts County who have played two more games.

Fleetwood currently sit 14th in the League One table, taking 46 points from 34 games played.

They have already added five loan signings in the last month in their bid to get out of England’s fifth tier.

Manager Simon Rusk is really showing how serious he is about making an impact at the club, after signing young forward pair Sam Dalby and Jack Stretton joined from Watford and Derby on temporary deals last week.

Prior to thrashing Solihull Moors 5-0 in midweek, the Hatters had scored just twice in their previous six games, so they know they need some sort of goalscorer.

Town boss Grayson said on Madden getting the virus two weeks ago: “Paddy is another who has unfortunately been struck by the Covid that seems to be going around unfortunately.

“A few players have had it now, most of them probably on the bus journey from Plymouth. Three players who were close to each other on the bus have ended up getting Covid.

“That’s why Paddy was missing and that’s a huge disappointment but Charlie Mulgrew should be back for the weekend. Paddy won’t be available and we’ll still be without Barrie McKay.
