Fans react on X as Jose Mourinho linked with Newcastle

The former Chelsea, United and Spurs boss has been sacked by Serie A club Roma

Football fans have been buzzing, not only about today’s fixtures, but also with speculation following the recent sacking of Jose Mourinho from Italian club Roma. The 60-year-old former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United manager is being tipped by some supporters to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle.

Mourinho spent two-and-a-half years at Roma, where he won the Europa Conference League in his first season. Despite losing in the Europa League final last term and a disappointing current ninth place standing in Serie A after four winless league matches, fans remember his tenure fondly.

However, a 3-1 defeat against AC Milan proved to be the final straw for Roma chiefs Dan and Ryan Friedkin. In their joint statement announcing Mourinho’s departure, they thanked him for his passion and commitment but stated that “immediate change is necessary.”

With Eddie Howe under pressure due to Newcastle’s recent form – four consecutive Premier League losses and an exit from Europe following a defeat to Milan – fans are hopeful of seeing Mourinho back in action soon.

Social media has been abuzz with predictions about this potential move.

One fan confidently declared: “Jose to Newcastle. Nailed on.”

Another added: “Newcastle should come calling.”

Mourinho hasn’t managed in the Premier League since being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in April 2021. However, some supporters believe plans could already be underway for him to take over at St James’ Park.

While most discussions revolve around him taking up managerial duties again, some fans are open-minded about what role he could play within their club.

One Newcastle supporter said: “I’d love Jose at Newcastle, not necessarily as a head coach/manager, just any other role we can give him.”

There is also speculation that Newcastle’s Saudi owners might be interested in recruiting Mourinho.

One user suggested: “Saudi will want Jose Mourinho to manage either in their league or to succeed Howe at Newcastle, no doubt.”

While it remains to be seen where Mourinho’s next career move will take him, the anticipation and excitement among fans are palpable. Whether he returns as a manager or takes up another role within a club, his potential return to the Premier League is eagerly awaited by many.
