Fans took to social media to react as Steve Cooper gives his first sit-down interview as the new manager of Leicester City.
The 44 year old Welshman spoke of his excitement, his plans, talks with players, chairman, director of football and how he intends to keep Leicester in the Premier League with a challenging season ahead.
You can watch his full interview or you can read what he had to say below…
āIām really excited, itās a brilliant challenge,ā Cooper began. āItās something I really canāt wait to get going with. Iām absolutely motivated for my next challenge, which Iām lucky enough to say is at Leicester City.
āMy next chapter was one that I knew had to be right and in my gut I really needed to feel was the right thing and this feels all of those things to me. In the end, itās about the job that you do, how the teams plays, the results that you get and the way that you go about it.
āThat is the nature of the game and our game. Of course, you want to do it in a certain way and you want to do it within what a club stands for. Itās the same for any manager. For me, thatās my challenge here now and Iām so committed to show the best of me for this Football Club, hoping that we can have some success together.
āIām in a personal position where Iām really hungry and motivated and Iām just really glad that Iāve got this challenge. My next challenge is going to be a really important one and to get it at a club like this is something that I canāt wait to get going with.
āIām really excited to get into the depths of this Football Club and understanding what it means and I take that aspect really importantly. But itās all with the idea of winning games in a way that the supporters can really identify with.
āWhatever club youāre at, that is the objective, but I know thatās a really important one here and one that Iām really committed to. I watched more or less every Leicester City game from last season. Iāve really gone for that over the last month or so. Iāve seen the atmospheres and the numbers of supporters.
āI should say, a real congratulations for last season, for everybody involved ā the players and the management staff and the executive team, the ownership, of course, and the supporters for really sticking together and making that important step back up. That is not an easy one ā I know that first hand.
āSo, to think that the Club has shown that mentality to come back up as they did, is a really good sign of what can be done when you stick together. And we need to continue that, thereās no doubt about it.
āItās quite common that a team can go up a league and continue to progress and I really hope that can be the case next season. You have to understand the context of the challenge that you are going into. Personally, the biggest step is Championship to Premier League, thereās no doubt about that.
āI have that experience of coming back into the Premier League and obviously this is a Premier League Football Club in every way, shape and form.
āIt lost its status for one season, managed to get back straight away, which is a really impressive achievement, but now itās about re-establishing ourselves back to the level. And whatās good is that there are so many people here who have seen both levels and there is a big difference.
āWeāve got to work really hard now in getting back to Premier League level and hitting the ground running when the season starts. The lads will be well rested and thatās great after a tough Championship year, but weāve really got to get the most out of them in pre-season in how we want to play and how we want to build on last season, while knowing that it is a completely different challenge in the Premier League.
āWe need to get ready for it in our way and thatās my objective as the coach and the coaching team and the players. When we get it right and we will and you see the best of us, Iām sure that the fans will be able to identify that this is an exciting Leicester City team and that is something that is really important to me.
āMy passion has always been coaching and trying to put all the right exercises and game plans and programme for the players to help them thrive. In a football programme, the most important thing is the players, they always come first.
āAs coaches, you need to try and guide and support them and put them in the right headspace to deliver and go and be themselves and give the best of themselves. If you do that in a real team way, and within a way that is associated with this Football Club in Leicester City, then thatās a powerful thing. But itās going to take a lot of hard work and thatās something Iām really looking forward to.
āIāve spent so much time studying the team and the squad and the infrastructure and the history. All of that is getting to know and reading, but what you really want to do is get your hands dirty in doing the best job possible for the Football Club and that starts with when the players come back.
āIāve made some initial phone calls to some of the players and Iāll get round them, but itās important that they have a rest as well. Weāre coming to the back end of June and I know the season finished quite early because of the automatic promotion, which is great.
āThe Premier League is starting a little bit later than normal, but weāll have a strong pre-season programme in place. What is great about the players and the staff that Iāve spoken to so far is that theyāre just really hungry to get going again next year.
āWhatever level you are at, hard work and good intentions and a winning mentality are really important and Iām really getting that sense from everyone that I am speaking to, so thatās a really exciting sign.
āWeāve got a lot of talent, a lot of character, a lot of good attributes in the squad already. With the right additions that the Club are working together in trying to bring in, weāll give ourselves the best chance of reaching the objectives that weāll set for next season.ā
With a history of developing young players at the Club, itās a trait that Cooper is keen to continue, having seen the strengths of Cityās Academy set-up in Seagrave, also recognising the importance of the collective – players, supporters and staff – in being successful.
āHomegrown academy players are always an important factor but every player is important and every staff member is important. The supporters are important. If we can have a good mix of everything that can contribute to a winning team, then thatās what we really want.
āTo do that you have to get to know each other and get to know their stories and how important this job is to them. Iām looking forward to telling the players how excited I am to do the best job possible here because I donāt take the responsibility and the faith shown in me lightly.
āIāve had some really good conversations with the Chairman and Jon [Rudkin] over the last few weeks and itās an atmosphere and a relationship that Iāve really enjoyed being in so far and I know that is something that is very prominent at the training ground and we need to make sure that goes onto the pitch and then through to the stadium. If we do that, we more than give ourselves a chance.
āThe training ground is incredible, the stadium is beautiful. Itās nice to drive through the city with a different mindset and thatās really important to me. Thereās been some incredible commitment from so many people, none more so than the ownership and I could feel that when I spoke to the Chairman on a number of occasions.
āTo see his passion for the Club, you can see how it really runs through. Heās had some really good rewards and some real highs. Itās a real commitment going forwards from me and some of the others who will be joining me and the guys who are already here, to try and continue to progress.
āThere was progression last year after coming into the league, letās try and keep building and Iād love in time to have more success here.ā
Fans react as Steve Cooper gives his first sit-down interview as Leicester manager…
I listened to it all. I really donāt think he looks good or happy š„¹ This but seemed to have an edge to it š I think the way #NFFC & some fans treated him hurt him. Heās a good guy & gave us so much. It pains me to see him with blood shot eyes and no spark. Look after him #LCFC pic.twitter.com/rfrkp8yIXT

@liamcox73: Absolute incredible manager who built the greatest togetherness, community amongst fans and the city as a whole and brought the greatest atmosphere to the WFCG Iāve ever known. Blokes a leader of men and I know football style opinions vary greatly but give him a chance
@FoxisBlue: That’s what we want to hear. Too many managers think they’re above saying that.
@BeanMallard: IN TO UM EARLY STEVE!!!!
@Tom1LCFC: Just watched Steve Coopers interview. Maybe I was too fast to judge him. He seems really down to earth. He has my backing #lcfc
@joshhollandLCFC: Have saw far too much negativity over Steve Cooper since he was appointed. Understand he wasnāt manyās first choice but heās here now and the club havenāt got head coach wrong since Paulo Sousa in 2010. 14 minutes of him talking shows how committed he is to succeed. #LCFC
@tomatosauce8888: He clearly is hungry for success. Seems very excited. We’ve got no choice but to get behind him and back him
@masonh94: Hope I’m wrong about him and I’ll hold my hands up if I am! š¦
@lcfcemily: He seems genuine about the job, nice guy and wanting well for the club
@Harrylcfc123: He comes across very well here I hope I’m eating humble pie by May.
@wadeeboycee: Decent interview that in fairness. Easy to talk the talk though innit. Hereās hoping he proves me wrong.
@sparky__26: Iām sorry, I canāt do it, canāt get my head round it, wonāt get my head round it. Sorry Steve but canāt wait for the sacked tweet already š©š©
@benbevins: I was devastated when he got appointed but Steve youāve won me over COOPERS BLUE AND WHITE ARMYš¦š¦š¦š¦
@supersouttar: He speaks well in the interview & feels like he can get the players on side, but the worry is thereās not a single manager in the prem that heās better than but Iām hoping heās good enough for us to stay up, whether the board will back him tho I doubt it #LCFC
Ā
Ā
@Olly_lcfc15: You know what, cooper seems a good bloke and Iām more than happy to back him, clearly has good intentions and knows what the club needs, just hope the board backs him in the transfer market #LCFC
@BenPhipps10: OK, I’ve shown my disappointment, this is me ramping up to properly getting behind him… Good interview, spoke very well. You can see why he built up a report with the fans at Forest. I just hope that he can get a tune out of this squad and prove us wrong. STEEEEVIIIIEEE COOPER
@_samorr_: Speaks very well, looking forward to the season now š¦
@Ross_Edmo: For me and I know most don’t feel the same , this isn’t the worst appointment. It could have been worst. He wasn’t my number one , but he’s our manager now so I’ll get behind him like you should. Back in the prem, let’s get behind the team and see what happens. #Lcfc
@parismae__: Quite enjoyed listening to this tbh. Heās well spoken & seems quite likeable. Actually hope it isnāt all negative for him here but time will tell
@Tom_LFTV: Really good interview by Stevie Cooper comes across very well and definitely hungry to make his market Leicester city, whatever you may think one things for sure time to get behind Steve and the team
@Wolf__Todd: All I could think while watching this interview was this quote from Ted Lasso: āAnd though I believe that (Steve Cooper) will fail here and (Leicester) will suffer the embarrassment of relegation, I won’t gloat when it happens, because I can’t help but root for him.ā
