Fans react as Rotherham ‘hold talks’ with new preferred choice following on from setback

Fans react as Rotherham United ‘hold talks’ with a new preferred choice following on from a setback earlier this week.

As per Rotherham Advertiser’s Paul Davis, the recently relegated club are now hold discussions with Mat Sadler, last in charge of Walsall, with three weeks until pre-season training gets underway.

The Millers’ Head of Football, Steve McClaren, wants to bring in the 41 year old, having seen a deal for Ian Burchnall collapse, unable to reach an agreement on financial terms.

Sadler was sacked by Walsall on the 11th of March, after picking up just one win in 11 games, with the club sitting 11th in the League Two table, despite being four points clear at the top in December.

The 2024/25 season saw him guide the Saddlers to top of the league by January, 10 points clear of second, signed a three and a half year deal, but despite 15 points clea rof third by the end of January, his side then went on a winless run of 13 games, seeing Walsall slip down into the playoffs on the final day of the season before losing 1-0 to Wimbledon in the playoff final.

Sadler was named interim at Walsall at the end of the 2022/23 season, replacing Michael Flynn, after his side finished 16th, before the role was made permanent the following month.

The 2023/24 season saw Walsall finish 11th. They had been 6th with 11 games to go, and 8th with two games to go, but picked up just one win and lost 4 of their last 5 games of the season to miss out on the playoffs.

Fans vent frustration after Rotherham suffer setback as managerial appointment deal falls through

Fans react as Rotherham ‘hold talks’ with their new preferred choice following on from the setback earlier this week…

@RUFC_James7: So we’ll be top by Christmas then mid table end of season if his Walsall sides are anything to go off

@MightyMillers20: Oh ffs

@MightyMillers20: @Saddlersgirl1 Least we’ll have won league by Christmas before finishing 15th

@bgannrufc: Jesus fucking Christ I’m done with this club. #rufc

@Callum__RUFC: So lets appoint someone whos failed to get promoted im consecutive seasons no thanks

@miller83862: McLaren is a fucking clown as well. It’s like someone’s just given him a list of cheap out of work managers and he’s bouncing from one to the next. Knows nothing about L2 football. #rufc

@miller83862: Sadler got sacked from fucking Walsall. Stewart is killing this club and it’s heartbreaking. #rufc

@rufcmiller89: Not Ferguson then. Not ambitious. Cheap. Not an inspiring choice. I despair. This season is gonna be grim. Things may get ugly for Tony and rightly so #rufc

@rufcmiller89: Mat Sadler. Deary me. Clearly we’ve got no ambitions. No money. No clout and no desire to turn things around. Keep doing things cheaply until Stewart finally sells. Sigh. But make sure you buy them season tickets…. #rufc

@rufc__cal: going for sadler then, no idea how i feel about that. can get a team playing then slip away, maybe changes with us? #rufc

@KbTerracetalk: Matt Sadler emerged as our number one target !!! Walsalls very own serial bottle job #rufc

@The_RUFC: Sadler has been a victim of his own success really – Walsall’s stuttering finish in 24/25 grabbed the headlines, but getting them up there with one of the lower budgets in L2 was impressive in the first place. Like Warne for us in 21/22, except we got it over the line #RUFC

@Harrison_Dobb: 4th time lucky

@eddie_broomhead: Barrel and scraping come to mind

@CraigyBoyBes: Cheap option obviously. Is this TS showing us why we should buy season tickets?? He’s lost it #rufc

@TillchazEllis: Totally underwhelmed

@KiranExley: If it is a Sadler he deserves a chance and to be backed. At least he’s got recent experience of the league and hopefully can learn from the mistakes he’s made #rufc

@smith98_josh: Failed 3 years in a row at Walsall. Yet good enough for us. Likes of Ferguson, Robinson available, yet we’ve chose the 2 cheapest options, yet we’ve got one of the highest season ticket prices in the league. Joke. #rufc

@owenRufc11: Why the fuck are we going for sadler, bottled it consecutively with walsall. Also can we fuck this “needs to be a former player” bollox off aswell #rufc

@ChopsakaMBT: I bet McLaren had never heard of Sadler a week ago 🤣🤣 ffs thought he had em queuing up around ground 🔴⚪️😂#rufc

@niall_m91: Predictably miserable replies to this, but you could argue the fact that his Walsall team were so far clear in 24/25 was encouraging rather than focus on how it ended. Ultimately he was a 96th min Bradford goal away from promotion with a team that outperformed expectations #rufc
