Fans make feelings clear as Sutton United part company with Steve Morison

Fans make their feelings clear as Sutton United part company with head coach Steve Morison following a slow start to the 2025/26 season.

The club have struggled, sitting in the relegation zone with five points from nine matches after three consecutive losses, including a 3-2 defeat to Tamworth and a 2-1 loss to Brighton in the National League Cup.

Head Coach Steve Morison leaves the club by mutual consent after 21 months, with Jon Meeney appointed as Interim Head Coach, until a new permanent replacement is made.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Sutton United Football Club can confirm the departure of Steve Morison as Head Coach by mutual consent.

Morison came in from Hornchurch to replace Matt Gray in January 2024 and stabilised performances at the backend of the 2023/24 campaign, having taken over with the U’s in the League Two relegation zone. Under his guidance, Sutton then took their relegation fight to the final day with an eight-game unbeaten run to end the campaign, but were condemned to the drop after a 4-4 draw with MK Dons.

He subsequently took charge of a massive overhaul on the pitch the following summer which led to a 12th place finish in the National League last term, before a difficult start to the current campaign.

The Club wishes to place on record its thanks to Steve for his service during his 21-month spell at Gander Green Lane. His energy, passion and dedication have been infectious to all, and his tireless work off the pitch in helping reshape the club as a more professional organisation has been invaluable. We wish him all the best for the future.

First Team Coach, Jon Meeney, will assume the position of Interim Head Coach, with a newly-appointed Head Coach to be confirmed in due course.

Last week, Morison said: “I have told them that they can all put their heads on their pillow because we can’t do any more,” said the former Millwall and Stevenage striker.

“We’re working so so hard – we’re not leaving any stone unturned to get out of this terrible start to the season.

“Everyone is down and disappointed. I’ve told them to not do what I did, to enjoy playing as much as I should have. I was far too caught up in it, but they need to enjoy doing what they do.”

But following defeat to Brighton U21s in the National League Cup, he expressed a mix of disappointment and pride.

He highlighted a strong performance from his team, particularly in the first half, where they maintained a compact shape and created chances, including a missed penalty opportunity.

However, defensive errors, such as taking quick throw-ins and free kicks, allowed Brighton to capitalise and score twice in quick succession.

Morison spoke of the technical superiority of Brighton, stressing the need for Sutton to avoid open play to stay competitive.

Despite the loss, Morison praised the debuts of young players who performed exceptionally. While frustrated by recurring mistakes and the team’s tendency to lose compactness, Morison focused on the positives, particularly the performances of the young players, viewing the match as a valuable experience for them.

But it proved to be his final game in charge of the club. Fans make their feelings clear as Sutton United part company with Steve Morison…

@thefuzzball40: Finally man. Go get Hinshelwood now.

@ConnorBondonno: We want hinshelwood in now lads. Get him and he will get us playoffs

@_AKB_1: Finally we are fucking free GET HINSHELWOOD IN NOW!

@Joe_DMB: At least it’s been done early enough for the new coach to assess the players properly and be able to make a difference before there’s too little of the season left for all to adapt.

@GregAslangul: Yeah look, we now need to focus on the battle to stay in this league rather than expecting massive improvements overnight, given the players and the budget we have. Wishing Steve all the best moving forward.

@renny_overton: Can teams stop sacking managers before they play us please #bufc

@danielhmiller2 This has honestly made me jump with joy, it’s wonderful day 🟡🟤🎉🥳🍾😀

@_AKB_1: Steve no refunds on the so called money u put forward for season tickets btw

@Navara10NZO: Think that’s the 4th casualty in NL already this season. It’s a tough league with not a lot between top & bottom, chairmen need a wake up call or have a go themselves.

@YouthCoachMike: Thanks for your efforts, Steve. Wishing @JonMeano8 the very best of luck – you’ve got this mate! 💪💛🤎

@aliroberts1987: It’s a shame it never worked out, but definitely the correct decision by the club. Had to act before it was too late as our NL status is under threat after the start we’ve had.

@DoubleKGaming25: I knew it was coming. Steve just wasn’t enough to stay, last season we had too many lacklustre performances and this season it looks like he’s getting us relegated already. Hopefully, the next manager will do a way better job and lead us back up to League 2.

@DarranPearce: Another national league manager gone but I’m not surprised by this one. Granted they have only been missing out by the odd goal but there certainly hasn’t been any improvement from last season

@andrew_youngers: Tinge of disappointment, was dealt a poor hand coming in too late during our relegation season in League Two, steadied the ship last season with a mid-table finish with a brand new squad. Start of this season has been very disappointing though winning 1 of 11 games.

@SuttonJared: Gutted for Steve, however this was increasingly looking like the right call. Never nice to see it though. Thanks for all your efforts in a difficult period for the team.

@OffTheLineBlog: In many ways, I think he’s done a decent job. Adapted well to the NL last year after relegation given overhaul. Assembled an exciting young group of talent on rather modest budget. Is he the one to go and get success? No: yet, I think he has laid decent foundations.
